‘Epitome of the Cinderella Story’ – Trent Williams Makes Feelings Clear on Brock Purdy’s $265,000,000 Extension

Brock Purdy has gone from the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to signing a massive five-year, $265 million contract. While many argued Purdy was overpaid, Purdy’s teammate and four-time All-Pro Trent Williams feels no one deserved such a big pay raise than the San Francisco 49ers’ star QB.

Trent Williams Raves Over Brock Purdy’s Extension

Purdy has been one of the most statistically efficient quarterbacks in the NFL since he took over late in the 2022 NFL season. In that span he ranks first in yards per attempt (8.9), first in EPA per dropback (0.21), second in success rate (52%), and third in touchdown rate (6.0%).

In the same span, he has led the 49ers to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance, and Williams believes he deserved every penny of the $265 million contract.

“For me, it’s just super, super fulfilling just to watch a guy like Brock,” Williams said. “You talk about a Cinderella story, I think this is the epitome of that. A guy going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making 50 million a year, it’s astronomical, and it couldn’t have happened to a better guy.”

Purdy was selected 262nd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft and got his first opportunity in Week 13 of that season when he replaced an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and led the 49ers to a 33-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The 25-year-old was named the starting QB next week and has never looked back since.

Purdy’s incredible run has made him the seventh highest-paid QB in the league, but more astonishing is that he will now be making $2.9 million each week, which is $300k more than his combined salary of the first three years. And if Williams is to be believed, “this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

“He is the guy for this team,” Williams added. “He is the guy for this franchise…He is going to get another contract, he’s going to win a lot of football games. He’s that good of a player. Super, super happy to see that for him. I love him like a brother, so I couldn’t be any happier.”

Purdy’s extension comes as the 49ers look to rebound from a disappointing 6-11 season in 2024, a campaign marked by injuries and roster turnover. Despite the team’s struggles, Purdy remained a bright spot, throwing for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns in 15 starts last season.

With several key contributors departing in the offseason, the 49ers are betting on Purdy to lead a revamped roster back to contention. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have both publicly expressed their confidence in Purdy’s leadership and performance.

“Brock is the leader of our team,” Shanahan said earlier this year. “We’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We just almost did. And I know he’s capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future.”
