The 2025 NFL Draft saw the Jacksonville Jaguars make a bold move, trading up with the Cleveland Browns to select Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter with the second overall pick.
In a recent YouTube video titled ‘Travis Hunter Arrives in JACKSONVILLE!! (Meets Staff + Facility Tour), fans got a glimpse of Hunter meeting coach Liam Coen, where the rookie revealed he could offer even more than his advertised skill set at wide receiver and cornerback.
Jacksonville Jaguars Aware of Plan for Travis Hunter
“You know I can play quarterback too, right? I can throw the ball, so on trick plays,” Hunter said, tossing a football to Coen.
It remains to be seen whether Hunter will get an opportunity to showcase his arm in a game, as he did not attempt a pass during his collegiate career.
The Jaguars know they must be strategic in how they deploy their two-way superstar. Balancing Hunter’s workload between offense and defense — while keeping him healthy — will be a major challenge.
During Friday’s news conference announcing Hunter’s selection, coach Liam Coen stressed the need for a flexible plan to ensure Hunter’s success at both wide receiver and cornerback.
“We have to be fluid. We have it laid out. But we also have to have the ability to be agile and be fluid on specific days. If we don’t feel like he got enough work on one side of the ball the previous day, then we need to be able to move forward and get him those reps the next day.”
Coen emphasized that the coaching staff is fully aligned when it comes to how Hunter will be utilized.
“Both Camp [defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile] and I, and Grant [offensive coordinator Grant Udinski], are all on the same page about, ‘Hey, how is this thing going to work? What do we want this to look like?’ We want it to look like what it looked like at Colorado, and that would be pretty good for us,” Coen said.
According to PFSN’s 2024 grades, the Jaguars ranked 18th in Offensive+ with a 72.8 grade and 31st in Defensive+ with a 62.7 grade.
Now, with a new coaching regime and one of the most unique talents in the NFL, Jacksonville is hoping Hunter’s arrival will help them take the next step and return to the playoffs. Whether he ever plays quarterback remains to be seen, but given his skillset, nothing is off the table.
