Travis Hunter is one of the biggest names in the 2025 NFL Draft. While he’s not the only prospect with the ability to play multiple positions, he’s widely viewed as the best overall skill player in the class. Still, like any top prospect, he has his critics — and Hunter had a message for them.
Travis Hunter Sends Message to Detractors
On Instagram on April 20, former Colorado Buffaloes WR/CB standout Travis Hunter shared a defiant message aimed at his doubters. He referenced comments he had seen questioning his ability at both positions and responded with one word.
“‘He’s not the best WR He’s not the best DB He’s OVERRATED’ GENERATIONAL,” he posted.
The post included two images. In the first, Hunter smiled while surrounded by trophies. In the second, the photo was nearly identical — except he was flexing with intensity and had swapped the smile for a focused, determined expression.
Landing Spots Could Determine Hunter’s Career Outlook
At this point, it’s a safe bet Hunter will go in the top five picks of the draft. But even a single-slot difference could reshape the trajectory of his NFL career — not necessarily because of team talent or quarterback play, though that will matter too.
More importantly, the coaching staff’s vision for him could dictate whether he succeeds as a true two-way player. One team might view him primarily as a wide receiver, another as a defensive back. If his coach limits him to one side of the ball, even for a season, it could hinder his growth at the other position.
That means if Hunter enters the league as a WR/CB hybrid but is asked to focus solely on offense, his skills as a corner could fade quickly. If that team later changes course, it might already be too late to reignite the same high-level performance at both positions.
Hunter has been vocal about wanting to play both ways. Still, that decision ultimately lies with the coaching staff.
Even if he starts as a two-way player, a permanent shift to just one role could make it difficult for him to return to being a true WR/CB threat down the line.
Pro Football Network’s April 21 mock draft projected Hunter to the Cleveland Browns.
PFSN’s Ian Cummings wrote, “Next to a QB, the Cleveland Browns’ biggest need is more playmaking talent. There’s arguably no QB worth taking at No. 2, and Andrew Berry has said he views Travis Hunter as a WR first.”
“Hunter is a unicorn simply with his high-end two-way ability, but as a WR, he has devastating potential as a three-level threat. He can carve up defenders with his routes, generate high-end RAC with his speed, agility, and bend, and make high-flying grabs.”
