In 2024, it became clear that the Houston Texans’ offensive line couldn’t return in the same shape for the upcoming season. With a potential superstar at quarterback, arguably the best in the division, protecting his health must be a top priority if the franchise hopes to finally reach its first-ever Super Bowl.
With several free agents still available, the Texans are projected to sign a five-time Pro Bowl guard who has earned over $100 million in his NFL career, bringing veteran stability that could be the key to a stronger 2025.
Texans Predicted To Sign Brandon Scherff Ahead of 2025 Season
Expectations were high for the Texans last season. After one of the best rookie campaigns by a quarterback in NFL history, C.J. Stroud was already being projected as one of the league’s top QBs. But in 2024, he faced the dreaded sophomore slump, and the team’s record plateaued at 10 wins, still enough to secure the AFC South title.
Part of Stroud’s regression came from the offense suffering a wave of injuries, especially at wide receiver, along with poor offensive line play. Ranked 31st in the league by PFSN, the unit went through major changes this offseason, including trading away Laremy Tunsil, their only true star, and Kenyon Green.
In a PFSN article selecting one free agent each team could still sign before the season starts, Brandon Austin highlighted how the addition of Scherff would be an ideal fit for both the player and the pressing needs Houston is looking to address.
“Scherff managed to stay healthy during his time with the Jaguars, which was a welcome change after several injury-plagued years in Washington. He’s now played in all 17 games for three straight seasons, following a stretch where he missed at least three games in five consecutive years,” Austin wrote.
Top Earning Guards in #NFL History
1. Zack Martin, $111.9M
2. Brandon Scherff, $111.2M
3. Joel Bitonio, $92.2M
4. Kevin Zeitler, $92M
5. Quenton Nelson, $84.2M— Spotrac (@spotrac) February 21, 2025
Over his 10-year NFL career, Scherff has earned a total of $111,226,076. In his most recent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he made an average of $16.5 million per year, a figure that placed him among the highest-paid players at his position. The three-year deal ran its full course, and for Houston, even a multi-year contract wouldn’t be out of the question.
One of Scherff’s greatest virtues is his consistency. In addition to staying healthy, he didn’t allow any sacks in 592 snaps, trailing only Trey Smith, who went sack-free in 665 snaps. His All-Pro selection in 2020 might seem like a long time ago, but he has remained one of the most reliable right guards in the entire NFL.
For Houston, it’s time to aim higher. After reaching the Divisional Round in back-to-back seasons, only a solid offensive line can help the team take the next step in competitiveness and become a true title contender. Scherff stands out as a realistic and viable option to strengthen the franchise in the present.
