What Happened to Terry McLaurin? Breaking Down Why Commanders’ Star WR Is Not Playing on SNF vs. Seahawks

Terry McLaurin has been having a frustrating 2025 NFL season with the Washington Commanders so far. He was forced to miss four games with a quad injury this year, and after returning last week, he is again dealing with the same injury.

Terry McLaurin injury update and potential timeline for a return

McLaurin initially injured his quad in a Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He was then forced to miss the Commanders’ next four games as he recovered, but he made his return last week against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football.

He was unable to get through the full game before re-injuring his quad, which required medical attention on the sidelines. Just days later, it was announced that he has officially been ruled out for Week 9 when they take on the Seattle Seahawks in another primetime game.

According to head coach Dan Quinn, it’s “too early to predict” how long McLaurin will be out this time around. He said that for now, he will not play in Week 9, but beyond that is yet to be determined. The Commanders have not placed him on the injured reserve list as of Sunday, so it’s possible that they are expecting a shorter absence this time around than the four games he already missed previously this season.

The star wide receiver has totaled 13 receptions on 21 targets for 203 receiving yards this year as he continues to battle through his quad injury. He also scored his first touchdown of the season last week and appeared to be trending back in the right direction, so the re-injury is even more devastating.

In his absence, Deebo Samuel is expected to fill in as the primary passing target for quarterback Jayden Daniels. They acquired him during the offseason to add depth to their wide receivers, but his role has been expanded by McLaurin’s health issues. He has been relatively solid with his new team, currently ranking as the 30th overall player in his position on PFSN’s Impact Rankings this year.

McLaurin has done an excellent job staying healthy during his time with the Commanders, missing just four total games across his first six seasons. This year has been a different story as he is set to miss his fifth game in this season alone.
