Why Exactly Novak Djokovic’s Sudden Termination of Partnership With Andy Murray Is Being Called a ‘Failed Experiment’ by Fans

Novak Djokovic’s announcement of the conclusion of his coaching partnership with Andy Murray drew various reactions from tennis fans. The Serb appointed Murray as his coach following his split from Goran Ivanišević, who had been part of his team since 2018.

During their six-month collaboration, Djokovic participated in seven tournaments, winning 12 matches and losing seven in singles events. His best performances this year included finishing as the runner-up at the 2025 Miami Open, where he lost to Jakub Menšík in the final.

He also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open but was forced to retire from his match against Alexander Zverev after the first set due to a leg injury he sustained during his quarterfinal clash with Carlos Alcaraz.

Fans React to Novak Djokovic Ending Coaching Partnership With Andy Murray

Djokovic began his clay court season at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters and then competed at the Madrid Open, where he was eliminated in the second round of both tournaments. He was scheduled to participate in the Italian Open but ultimately withdrew.

Following his withdrawal, the former World No. 1 took to social media to announce the end of his coaching partnership with Murray.

“Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun & support over last six months on & off the court. I really enjoyed deepening our friendship together 🙏,” the Serb posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Initially, they had agreed to work together primarily during the United States hard court season and select clay court tournaments. However, their collaboration concluded before Djokovic could participate in the 2025 French Open.

The news of Djokovic and Murray’s split drew a variety of reactions among tennis fans, who took to social media to share their thoughts. One fan described the coaching partnership as a “failed experiment,” as Djokovic could only secure 12 wins without clinching a single title during their time together.

“It ends with Djokovic 12 wins 7 losses. A failed experiment,” a fan posted.

Another fan speculated that Djokovic may have considered retirement with Murray as his coach, but the numerous losses this season might have accelerated the decision to part ways.

“I imagine Novak wasn’t expecting to close his career with Murray as his Coach anyways – this was kinda expected but maybe expedited with recent losses,” a fan wrote.

“Not surprising, it’s clay season and Murray was the weakest on this surface. Also the results weren’t the best, but in all honesty I think Novak is more to blame considering he most probably didn’t train and take care of his body after the Olympic gold,” a fan posted.

Was never going to last…what can someone teach you that you beat more than 20 times?” a fan wrote.

“Love these 2 but Murray needs to coach someone who’s going to take it seriously and Novak clearly wants a yes man to help him coast to the end of his career. Murray to join team draper would be exciting 🤞🏻,” a fan posted.

“This doesn’t really surprise me. “really enjoyed deepening our friendship together” He really got Andy to coach him so they could become better friends,” a fan wrote.

It was a weak partnership anyway. One made just for the media optics and one that resulted in basically nothing but media hype detracting from every other player on court with him,” a fan posted.

Novak Djokovic to Next Compete at Geneva Open 2025

The 2025 Geneva Open is set to take place from May 18 to May 24, 2025, at the Tennis Club de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland.

Novak Djokovic has accepted a Wild Card entry into the main draw of this ATP 250 clay-court tournament. In addition to the former World No. 1 players like Taylor Fritz and defending champion Casper Ruud, among others, will also compete in this tournament.

Last year, Djokovic entered the Geneva Open as the top seed, also receiving a Wild Card into the main draw. He began his campaign in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round. He triumphed over Yannick Hanfmann in his opening match and then defeated sixth seed Tallon Griekspoor in the quarterfinals. His run came to an end in the semifinals when he was eliminated by the eventual runner-up Tomáš Macháč.
