Andrey Rublev recently showcased resurgence after picking up pace at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open. The Russian player has already made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon, defeating Adrian Mannarino, Lloyd Harris and Laslo Djere.
But how did the young champ make a notable transition from facing a first-round exit at the Australian Open to reaching the fourth round at both French Open and now Wimbledon? The reason lies behind his coaching team, including the latest addition of Marat Safin.
Andrey Rublev’s Coaching Team: A Closer Look
Andrey Rublev officially started working with Marat Safin in Mar. 2025, just before the European clay‐court swing. This includes the UTS Nîmes exhibition (April 4–5) and the Monte Carlo Masters. Safin, a two-time Grand Slam champion, joined team coach Fernando Vicente in an advisory/co‐coaching role.
Before Safin’s addition, Rublev shared stable partnership with Spanish coach Fernando Vicente since 2017. The former top‑30 player helped Rublev climb into the Top 10 and win numerous titles, including two Masters 1000 titles on clay.

Rublev had long admired Safin since childhood, seeing him as both inspiration and a model in handling intense match emotions. After asking him privately and discovering Safin was open to coaching, Rublev seized the opportunity during a downtime that included early tournament exits and mental-health struggles.
Safin himself secured the world No. 1 ranking as a player and won the 2000 US Open and 2005 Australian Open, plus five Masters titles, five ATP 1000 runs, and 15 tour-level singles trophies. He later marked an end to his professional career in 2009. Post-retirement, he served in Russian sports administration and politics. Coaching Rublev marked his debut in that role.
Besides Safin and Vicente, Rublev’s team also includes Marcos Borderias, currently playing the role of his fitness coach. The Spaniard earlier trainied with Maria Jose Martínez, Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo, and the Argentine player Pedro Cachin, who climbed from No. 253 to No. 54 in the ATP rankings with his support.
He later received a message on Instagram that changed everything. It was a job offer from Galo Blanco, a former World No. 40 and the agent of Andrey Rublev.
Andrey Rublev on Longstanding Desire to Work With Marat Safin
As the update of Safin working with Andrey Rublev went viral on social media platforms, the Russian player stepped forward to unveil his long standing desire to work with him. During his training period with the two-time grand slam champion back in April, Rublev mentioned how it always a dream for him to work with Safin.
“Deep inside, I always wanted to work together, but I knew that he was not interested. And I never wanted to put any pressure because I really care about Marat. Later on, I found out that he’s kind of ready to work in tennis or something like that, that he don’t mind,” he told Tennis.com.
“And then I say, ‘OK, even if it’s not gonna be me, at least I can ask.’ I have nothing to lose if I ask. Then my agent ask, they talk and little by little we work for a couple of days together.”
Having already made it to the fourth round, Rublev will now compete against defendjng champion Carlos Alcaraz in his next match for a place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
