He began his grass-court swing following a subpar clay season, which included early exits in Madrid, Rome, and his third-round run at Roland Garros.

He began his grass-court campaign with a first-round loss in Halle. Fonseca then opened his Eastbourne run with a remarkable comeback victory over Zizou Bergs. After narrowly dropping the first set 6-7 (10) in a tiebreak, the Brazilian bounced back to dominate the next two sets 6-0, 6-3 and advance to the next round.
That was notably his first tour win on grass.
