Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, recently offered a tip to Coco Gauff for enhancing her grip on grass courts.
The renowned mentor offered a technical analysis of the World No. 2’s game, derived from her short-lived campaign at the grass court championships in Berlin.
Rick Macci Offers Valuable Suggestion to Coco Gauff Ahead of Wimbledon
Fresh off her commendable victory at the French Open, Gauff lost her first match on grass at the Berlin Open on June 19 as she lost 6–3, 6–3, to Chinese qualifier, Wang Xinyu. While the 2025 French Open winner promised to work on her weaknesses ahead of Wimbledon, Macci stepped forward to offer his advice.
Through his social media handle (X), Macci noted that Gauff should focus on the baseline game and strengthen her forehand to achieve optimum results at the upcoming Major.
“They key for Coco on grass will be controlling the center of the court and making the baseline her closest friend going forward on the forehand from start to end. @CocoGauff,” he wrote.

Macci has offered strong backing for Coco Gauff throughout her career. The American coach has pointed out areas for technical improvement, mainly pressing on her serve and forehand.
According to him, the issues can be fixed quickly, sometimes even in a single session. He also never changed his perspective about the young champ, even during her most disappointing defeats.
Coco Vandeweghe Explains How the Loss in Berlin Could Be a Boon for Gauff
While several members of the tennis community expressed doubts about Gauff’s chances at Wimbledon after her recent loss, CoCo Vandeweghe saw it from a different perspective. According to the former American pro, the recent defeat won’t have a negative impact on the two-time Grand Slam champion.
“I just don’t even think this shakes her confidence at all. This is not going to be her best surface, but you know what she is going to do? She is going to take this loss and really work on herself. That is what we have seen time and time again from Coco Gauff. She is the ultimate competitor,” she said, in an interview with Tennis Channel.
In a total of 35 matches played in the ongoing season, Gauff managed to win 26, keeping her win-loss index stable.
While her record on grass is still a 0-1, it still remains to be seen if she walks in stronger at Wimbledon.
