Novak Djokovic Rubbishes Italian Tennis Chief’s Claim About His ATP Finals’ Decision

Novak Djokovic’s participation in the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin has been a key point of discussion in recent weeks. The president of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, recently stated that the 24-time Grand Slam champion would participate in the year-end event, and many took that as confirmation.

However, Djokovic has now tempered those expectations, sharing that his decision is still not finalized.

Novak Djokovic Provides Honest Update As ATP Finals Participation Hangs in the Balance

Djokovic’s presence at the ATP Finals has become almost a tradition, and competing this year would mark his 17th appearance at the prestigious event. However, concerns over a leg issue, first felt during his Six Kings Slam clash with Taylor Fritz, which forced him to retire, and later followed by his withdrawal from the Paris Masters, have cast uncertainty over his participation in Turin.

However, his return to action in Athens came as a positive sign. Furthermore, Binaghi’s remarks on Italian radio channel Rai Gr Parlamento on Monday further reinforced expectations of Djokovic’s participation.

“We received confirmation that he will be there,” he reportedly said.

However, the surprise arrived when Djokovic addressed the matter after his second-round win over Alejandro Tabilo at the Hellenic Championships 2025. In his on-court interview, the Serb openly questioned Binaghi’s assertions, stating that neither he nor his team had provided any update to the Italian Tennis Federation president. He stressed that his decision would only be made after his campaign in Athens concludes.

“I don’t know where he (Binaghi) got that information from. Definitely not from me or my team. I will decide at the end of this tournament,” he said.

With Djokovic’s participation still hanging in the balance, the race for the second remaining berth at the ATP Finals in Turin remains wide open. Notably, two of the prime contenders who can occupy Djokovic’s spot in his absence would be World No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. Currently, Musetti is ahead of Auger-Aliassime by 160 ranking points.

Djokovic, currently in action at the Hellenic Championships 2025, opened his campaign in the second round with a composed 7-6(3), 6-1 win over Alejandro Tabilo. The Serbian star is eyeing his second title of the season and now turns his focus to a quarterfinal clash against Portugal’s Nuno Borges.
