Her single loss in the group stage came from World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated her with a concluding score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. They have played 12 matches against each other, and Sabalenka leads their head-to-head record with nine wins.

Considering her group stage loss, she had mentioned while appreciating the competition between them, “I do think we have really great matches, memorable matches. I wish I won more of them … even my coaches were saying, they’re like, ‘Whenever you guys play each other, it seems like you guys seem to bring out such a high level in each other.'”

She advanced to the semi-final round, losing the match to the eventual champion, Elena Rybakina. The Russian-Kazakhstani star went on to defeat Sabalenka with a 6-3, 7-6 (0) score, lifting her first Billie Jean King Trophy, a historic mark that made her the first player from her homeland to achieve this feat.

Despite losing to the champion, Pegula expressed optimistic thoughts on her performance, further commending the former’s form, she added, “Tough loss. Kudos to her, she played some really good tennis, always serving well. I felt like in these conditions and on these court, especially with her serve, it’s tough when she’s getting free points every single game. But regardless, I thought I played at a really high level today.”

Pegula had defeated fellow American, World No. 3, Coco Gauff, and Jasmine Paolini in her group stage matches.
