Jannik Sinner Quashes Claims About His Paris Masters Abandonment in New Statement

Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner has addressed speculation about his upcoming tournament schedule following his unexpected retirement from the Shanghai Masters. The world No. 2 moved quickly to clarify his plans after reports emerged suggesting he would skip the Rolex Paris Masters.

Sinner’s statement comes at a crucial time as players finalize their end-of-season campaigns ahead of the ATP Finals.

What Did Jannik Sinner Say About the Rolex Paris Masters?

Sinner’s Shanghai Masters campaign ended disappointingly when the defending champion was forced to retire during his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor. The Italian was trailing 6-7(3), 7-5, 3-2 when severe cramping in his right thigh forced him to stop after 2 hours and 40 minutes of grueling tennis.

The world No. 2 appeared to struggle from late in the second set, rushing to place ice towels around his neck at changeovers before the cramping became too severe to continue.

Following this setback, reports surfaced suggesting Sinner would alter his schedule significantly. According to Italian journalist Simone Eterno, he was expected to play the Vienna Open but skip the Rolex Paris Masters before heading to the ATP Finals. The reports also indicated he would not participate in the Davis Cup Finals.

However, Sinner quickly moved to dispel these claims in a recent interview. Speaking about his recovery from the Shanghai retirement, the 24-year-old confirmed his commitment to a full end-of-season schedule.

“I’ve taken two days off [after the cramps in Shanghai] and then we got back to work: I feel good physically and mentally, we’re ready here and for the upcoming tournaments, Vienna, Paris, Turin: hopefully we can finish the year on a high note,” Sinner stated.

Talking about playing in Turin, Sinner added, “I’m happy, it’s the second consecutive year that I can play here, let’s see what the atmosphere will be like, but I’m happy. Certainly, every year is different and has its own stories; there are very tough opponents, let’s see what I can do this year.”

The Italian’s confirmation puts to rest speculation about his participation in Paris, where he has historically struggled with a 1-3 record from his three previous appearances. His physical condition appears to have improved significantly following the brief rest period after Shanghai, with medical staff addressing the cramping issues that forced his retirement against Griekspoor.

Sinner’s decision to maintain his original schedule demonstrates his determination to compete at the highest level despite the physical demands of the tour’s final stretch. The confirmation comes as welcome news for tournament organizers and fans, particularly given the competitive landscape in the race for year-end positioning.

The Italian is set to face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday at the exhibition tournament Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, Dubai. The winner of this match will face the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
