Fourth-seeded Flavio Cobolli will look to continue his campaign at the 2025 Moselle Open when he takes on fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego in the second round. It has been a significant year for Cobolli on the court, as the young Italian won titles in Bucharest and Hamburg and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. At the Moselle Open, he began with a bye in the first round.
Grand Slam results at the Australian Open and Wimbledon have largely propped up what has been an average season for Lorenzo Sonego. Reaching the quarterfinal in Melbourne, along with last-eight appearances in Marseille and Stockholm, have been the Italian’s standout performances this year. He began his campaign at the Moselle Open with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over British qualifier Jan Choinski in the first round.

Cobolli vs Sonego Prediction
Cobolli has just started his ATP career and has yet to make a mark on the hard courts. He reached the final in Washington last year, finishing second to Sebastian Korda, with the Italian yet to make a deep run at any indoor event.
On the other hand, Sonego has reached two indoor hard-court finals in his career, including winning the title at the Moselle Open in 2022, defeating Alexander Bublik in the final. He also reached the final in Vienna back in 2020, losing out to Andrey Rublev.
Cobolli’s inexperience on indoor hard courts is evident in his results on the surface this year, as he has not won more than a single match at any indoor event. Coming into Metz, he had a second-round exit at the Paris Masters, losing to Ben Shelton.
Sonego has had some success on indoor hard courts this season, reaching the quarterfinals in Marseille earlier this year. In recent events, the Italian player also reached the quarterfinals in Stockholm and had a decent third-round appearance at the Paris Masters, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
Even though Cobolli is the seeded player and the more in-form player, his record on indoor hard courts and his status as a former champion in Metz make Sonego the favorite to win the upcoming match.
