Danielle Collins recently expressed her feelings regarding the proposed cuts to food stamp programs in an emotional letter. Recently, there have been talks about the American government’s plan to reduce nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and food assistance programs.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal government initiative designed to provide food-purchasing assistance to low to no-income individuals to ensure that they can maintain appropriate nutrition and health.
Danielle Collins Opens Up About Food Stamps Facing Big Cuts Under New Tax Bill
Reacting to the Republican proposal to cut approximately 30% of SNAP funding, Collins took to social media to share a video of Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet criticizing these funding reductions.
The former World No. 7 expressed her disbelief that anyone could consider taking away basic necessities like food from those in need, highlighting the detrimental impact such cuts would have on individuals’ daily lives.
“It’s really difficult to understand how we as humans can hurt one another by taking away basic necessities and how we destruct the resources that gives us life daily. It is hard for me to wrap my head around why really bad things are continuing to happen, why people get sick, and why so many people and children are facing hunger,” Collins said.
She shared that it breaks her heart to think about the possibility of someone losing their food stamps.
“It breaks my heart in half when I hear about the possibility of someone’s food stamps being taken away from them. It hits close to home as one of my childhood best friends who grew up in a one parent household relied on food stamps and her meals provided by our public school. Some of my classmates’ only meal was the meal they received at school,” she continued.
In her letter, Danielle Collins also urged those with the means to contribute to organizations that help ensure children have access to healthy food and a better quality of life.
“So when I hear about people who are hungry it really strikes a cord. No one is getting rich from assistance programs like SNAP. As I’ve been trying to figure out ways to help, I’m encouraging everyone to call their reps and to be advocates for those in need. And if you have the means please consider donating to the @savethechildren,” Danielle Collins added.
