Casper Ruud Reflects on Partnering With Iga Świątek

Ruud and Świątek came to New York at the back of contrasting runs in Cincinnati. While the Norwegian was out in the first round, the Pole won the women’s singles event without dropping a single set.

At the US Open, Ruud and Świątek beat Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe 4-1, 4-2 before triumphing by the same scoreline against Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti to book their place in the semifinals.

After their quarterfinal win, Ruud spoke about playing with Świątek during their post-match press conference, sharing his admiration, respect, and how much he is enjoying the partnership.

“I’m really impressed with Iga, the way she handles the men’s ball, especially. She can return the guys’ serve. From the baseline, she can rally with anyone. That’s both our strongest sides, I would say. We played to the strongest sides of our own game. We had good chemistry from the first point. I think that’s also important in doubles,” the Norwegian said.

Ruud also lauded the World No. 2’s behavior off the court, stating:

“Yeah, just the grit and determination. She’s a very kind human, as I see her from the outside, I get to know her a little bit more. She wants the best for everyone around her. On the court she’s very, very intense in a good way. I like those kind of players. I think we both idolized Rafa when we grew up. Just the focus when we go on court, we’re there to do a job, kind of go into the zone. She really does that incredibly well.”

Świątek and Ruud on Who Approached Whom for US Open Partnership

Speaking after beating Ruud and Świątek were asked who approached the other first to form their US Open mixed doubles team.

Ruud said that the Pole approached him with a text, saying:

“I think the fact that we played in United Cup and this was announced just a few weeks later, I think, I had in mind that maybe, if Iga wanted to play, I’ll be down. And then she actually shot me a text and asked if I wanted to play,” he said.

Świątek then cut in and said that Ruud was the one who texted her.

“What? No! You texted…That’s not possible, because when your agent asked my agent, I think, or you asked me, I had no idea what I’m signing up for. I was like, ‘Yeah, okay. I wanna play with Casper.’ But I didn’t know what the tournament is gonna even look like. So, it must have been you. Come on,” the Pole said.

Ruud and Świątek will next lock horns with the top-seeded pair of Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper.
