Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner Rival With 0 Wins Against Them Backed To Be Australian Open Challenger

Nick Kyrgios rarely holds back his opinions, and his latest take on Alex de Minaur is no exception. With the 2026 Australian Open on the horizon, the former Wimbledon finalist weighed in on whether his countryman can finally break through on home soil. While Kyrgios sees potential, he also pointed out the massive roadblocks standing in De Minaur’s way: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Can Alex De Minaur Challenge the Top Stars in Melbourne?

Before he faces World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in their “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition in Dubai on Dec. 28, Kyrgios broke down the Grand Slam landscape. He believes De Minaur is in the mix, but the margin for error is razor-thin.

Sinner and Alcaraz have turned the majors into their personal playground, splitting the 2025 titles evenly. Sinner claimed the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Alcaraz took the French Open and US Open.

During a recent interview, Kyrgios explained that De Minaur’s chances hinge heavily on the form of those two giants.

“Alex is doing an incredible job, honestly. I think he is a real challenger in this Australian Open. Perhaps not in a Grand Slam best-of-five sets, considering how Alcaraz and Sinner are playing right now. But if one of them were to falter early, I’d say Demon is one of the other three or four players who truly have a chance to win.” (via Punto de Break)

How Do Past Struggles Against Top Rivals Impact De Minaur?

The numbers paint a tough picture for the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open winner. De Minaur has faced Alcaraz five times and Sinner 13 times without securing a single victory against either. Despite this head-to-head drought, Kyrgios insists that De Minaur’s value goes beyond trophies or stats. He highlighted the Australian star’s relentless motor as a defining trait.

“We all know how hard he works. I’ve been around him, and his competitiveness and work ethic are literally unmatched. But, look, regardless of that, he may never win a Grand Slam, or he may never win a Masters or whatever, but I like what he’s doing now. It’s still incredible. He has been in the top ten for years and has already achieved incredible things. He has done incredible things for Australia, regardless of what happens.”

Fans won’t have to wait long to see him back on the court. De Minaur headlines the Australian roster for the 2026 United Cup, running from Jan. 2 to Jan. 11. He joins a squad featuring Jason Kubler, John-Patrick Smith, Maya Joint, Maddison Inglis, and Storm Hunter for the mixed-team event on home soil.
