Carlos Alcaraz’s Coach Reveals the ‘Hardest Thing’ He Faced When He Agreed To Train the Spaniard as a Teenager

Carlos Alcaraz's coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, opened up about his experience of working with the young Spaniard during his teenage years.

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, recently opened up about his experience of working with the young Spaniard during his teenage years. Alcaraz and Ferrero began working together nearly seven years ago, in September 2018, when Alcaraz was just 16 years old.

Since turning professional in 2018, Alcaraz has achieved remarkable success, winning five Grand Slam titles, two each at the Wimbledon Championships and the French Open, and one US Open title. He has also claimed 21 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including seven ATP 1000 titles.

Alcaraz earned a silver medal for Spain at the 2024 Paris Olympics and was also ranked World No. 1 in singles in the ATP rankings.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero Talks About How It Was Working With the Spaniard as a Teenager

Recently, Rolex, a Swiss watch brand for which Alcaraz has been a brand ambassador since January 2022, released a short documentary featuring interviews with various individuals connected to Alcaraz’s life. In this documentary, Ferrero reflected on his early impressions of Alcaraz.

Ferrero noted that when he first began coaching Alcaraz, he saw the young Spaniard’s inherent winning mentality. He mentioned that Alcaraz already possessed an “arsenal of weapons,” and it was important for him to strategically harness it to develop Alcaraz’s game and improve him as a player.

“When I started working with him, he already had the ability. He had what it took to make lots of plays. But the hardest thing was putting together his “arsenal of weapons”. When to choose them and choose them well. And from there, he could develop as the player he is,” Ferrero said.

‘Carlos Alcaraz Is a Player With a Potential That Is Still Yet To Be Realized’ – Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero

Earlier this month, in an interview with ATP Tour, Alcaraz’s coach, Ferrero, praised him, expressing that when the young Spaniard plays with positivity, courage, and fearlessness. He added that it transforms Alcaraz into a player whose potential is still waiting to be fully realized.

“Carlos has always had the level, the problem is that it’s very hard to produce it in every match. We know that when he plays positively, bravely, when he plays without fear, then he is a player with a potential that is still yet to be realized,” Ferrero said.

Ferrero acknowledged that while Alcaraz cannot be deemed a perfect player, he is approaching a level of excellence that is exceptionally rare on the ATP Tour.

“I don’t think you can call it perfect because nobody is perfect, but it’s true that he’s getting close to a level that is very rare on Tour. With his maximum intensity, he can make others struggle. That’s the way we’re heading, getting him to really focus on himself, on doing his own things well. The consequence will be that exceptionally high level he has,” he added.

Looking ahead, Alcaraz is set to compete at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, which will take place from Jun. 30 to July 13, 2025, at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London.

The former World No. 1 will enter the grass court Major as the two-time defending champion, having triumphed in both the 2023 and 2024 finals against Novak Djokovic.
