World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will take on sixth seed Jessica Pegula in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open, with the winner facing either third seed Coco Gauff or seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in the final of the WTA 1000 event. All but one of Pegula’s matches so far during the Asian swing have gone to three sets. The American edged out compatriot Hailey Baptiste and ninth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova to set up a quarterfinal clash with Kateřina Siniaková. Here, she came back from a set down to triumph 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 over the Czech qualifier and book her place in the semifinals.

Sabalenka vs. Pegula Head-to-Head
Sabalenka has dominated most of her fixtures against Pegula, having a 8-2 head-to-head lead over the American. The two most recently locked horns in the semifinals of the US Open, with the World No. 1 coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Sabalenka vs. Pegula Prediction
Sabalenka’s victory over Rybakina was more of a statement than many would want to believe. This was the first time the Belarusian triumphed over the Kazakh in straight sets and it just reflects on her dominance in Wuhan. Hence, Pegula will no doubt find it diffficult. That said, the American put on a tough fight at the US Open, so she cannot be written off.
Sabalenka has won 88 out of 122 points on her first-serve so far at the Wuhan Open, amassing 15 aces while serving ten double-faults. The Belarusian has taken her game from strength to strength, as well as her mentality, so it will no doubt be tough for Pegula to cope with her.
The American has won 121 out of 177 points (68.3%) on her first serve so far in Wuhan, serving nine aces. Pegula has produced an insane amount of resilience to overcome so many matches despite being pushed to three sets. However, she will be put to the test this time.
While Pegula has managed to put up a fight against Sabalenka on numerous occasions, it will not be a surprise if the American’s string of three-set matches comes to an end, albeit in a way she may not want it to.
Prediction: Sabalenka to win in straight sets.
