Tee Higgins Injury Update Week 14: Will the Bengals Wide Receiver Play?

The Bengals added Tee Higgins to the injury report on Thursday with a hamstring issue -- should fantasy managers be concerned?

We are now firmly in the final stretch of the 2022 NFL season. Daily practice reports are as long as ever, with injury updates pouring in. The Cincinnati Bengals added Tee Higgins to Thursday’s practice report with a hamstring injury.

What do we know about Higgins’ hamstring, and should fantasy football managers be concerned about whether he will play on Sunday?

Tee Higgins Injury Update

Update: Tee Higgins has been removed from the Bengals’ injury report on Friday.

It’s been quite some time since Higgins was injured. Unfortunately, his run of health is in jeopardy after popping up on Thursday’s practice report with a hamstring issue.

Cincinnati officially listed Higgins as limited. Normally, limited sessions paint a more optimistic picture. However, in this case, Higgins wasn’t listed at all on Wednesday’s practice report. That means the injury occurred at Thursday’s practice. Midweek downgrades are never good.

The Bengals could just be exercising extra caution with their stud WR2 (who could easily be a WR1). It’s entirely possible this is nothing. Nonetheless, we may not know for sure until we see Higgins’ participation level at Friday’s practice.

Typically, we have some insight from beat reporters regarding why players are listed on practice reports with injuries. On Thursday, we got nothing. All we know is Higgins is dealing with a hamstring issue of unknown severity. The limited tag suggests he started practice and could not finish it, which, of course, is concerning.

Will Tee Higgins Play This Sunday?

As I mentioned before, midweek downgrades should not be summarily dismissed. If Higgins does not practice on Friday, he’s almost certainly not going to play.

On a more positive note, as long as Higgins can get in a limited session on Friday, I will feel good about his prospects of playing.

It’s been a long time since the Bengals had all three of Higgins, Joe Mixon, and Ja’Marr Chase on the field together. That was poised to happen this week, but now it’s no longer a guarantee.

If Higgins can’t go, Tyler Boyd would once again step into the WR2 role. It’s a spot Boyd’s historically thrived in, but he didn’t during Chase’s month-long absence. For whatever it’s worth, Boyd has been far more productive filling in for an injured Higgins than an injured Chase.

With that said, I’d have a hard time trusting Boyd. His 10 PPR fantasy points last week marked his first time in double-digits since Week 8. Even with tight end Hayden Hurst also out this week, Higgins’ absence likely just means more Chase and more Mixon.

It wouldn’t shock me to see Mixon and Samaje Perine on the field at the same time either, given how well Perine performed in Mixon’s two-game absence due to his concussion. Perhaps if that happens, I will take Perine’s highers on Underdog Fantasy

Fantasy managers potentially needing to replace Higgins will be best served looking to whoever they have on their bench. Hopefully, this ends up being a big old nothing burger and we see Higgins at practice on Friday and playing on Sunday.
