Super Bowl records that could be broken in 2021

As we head towards Super Bowl 55, which records could we see broken when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs take the field? Let’s look at some of the individual and NFL team Super Bowl records that could fall in this matchup.

Tom Brady will extend a number of his own Super Bowl records and could extend others

Heading into Super Bowl 55, Tom Brady holds a number of Super Bowl records. Some of these he will extend for sure, while others will depend on the game’s outcome. Here are the Super Bowl records Brady already has:

  • Super Bowl MVP awards: 4
  • Super Bowl wins by a player: 6
  • Games played: 9
  • Games started: 9
  • Oldest quarterback to start and to win: 41 years and 184 days
  • Career passing attempts: 392
  • Attempts in a single game: 62
  • Career completions: 256
  • Consecutive completions in a Super Bowl: 16
  • Completions in a single game: 43
  • Career passing yards: 2,838
  • Passing yards in a single Super Bowl: 505
  • Career passing touchdowns: 18
  • Attempts without an interception: 48
  • Most safeties by a quarterback: 1

Tom Brady could add his name to some other Super Bowl records

One record that will be in Brady’s sites will be matching Peyton Manning as the only starting QB to win a Super Bowl with two separate teams. Manning achieved that feat after winning with the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

However, there are two records that Tom Brady will be hoping to avoid. John Elway currently holds the record for the most Super Bowl interceptions in a career with eight. Tom Brady enters Super Bowl 55 with six career interceptions. If he throws two in the game, he will join Elway atop the list. Three interceptions will see Brady sitting atop the list on his own.

The second of those records is career Super Bowl fumbles. Brady currently has four fumbles in the Super Bowl. Therefore, he sits just one behind former Dallas Cowboys QB Roger Staubach, who had five in his four Super Bowl appearances.

Could Bruce Arians become the oldest head coach to win the Super Bowl?

Bruce Arians heads into this Super Bowl at 68 years of age. The current record for the oldest Super Bowl victory by a head coach was Bill Belichick in Super Bowl 53. Belichick was 66 years and 298 days old.

Therefore, a victory for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would see Arians become the oldest Super Bowl-winning head coach. At 62 years old, Reid is four years too young to break the record himself.

Will Super Bowl 55 be the lowest attended Super Bowl ever?

Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed to attend, Super Bowl 55 will see 22,000 spectators in attendance. This will set the record for the lowest attendance ever at a Super Bowl. The previous low occurred in Super Bowl I between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Thus, the Chiefs will hold the somewhat unfair record of having played in the two lowest attended Super Bowls in NFL history.

What other records could we see broken in 2020?

With two superb offenses facing off in Super Bowl 55, we could potentially see several records broken in 2020.

Could we see the record for the most touchdowns in a single game broken?

The current record for touchdowns in a single game is three. This has occurred six times by five different players. Jerry Rice twice scored three touchdowns in a single game (Super Bowl 24 and 29). The most recent player to score three touchdowns in a single game was James White in Super Bowl 51.

Additionally, the most touchdowns in a single quarter by an individual is two. This has been achieved seven times, including by Damien Williams last season. Tyreek Hill had two touchdowns in the first quarter against the Buccaneers back in Week 12. If he can repeat that feat, he would become the eighth player on this list.

The record for the most combined completions by two QBs could be broken in this Super Bowl

In Super Bowl 44, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees combined for 63 completions. This game features two quarterbacks who could both throw the ball upwards of 40 times. Therefore, we could see the record of 63 completions broken in this game.

Could someone top Steve Young’s record for the most passing touchdowns?

In Super Bowl 29, Steve Young threw six touchdowns. This game is expected to be extremely high scoring. However, the Buccaneers have one of the best run defenses in the league. Therefore, we could see Patrick Mahomes approach, and potentially pass, Young’s record of six passing touchdowns.

Rob Gronkowski would need a big game to pass Jerry Rice for the most receptions in a Super Bowl career

Entering Super Bowl 55, Rob Gronkowski has 23 receptions. He currently sits 10 receptions short of Rice’s record of 33. If Gronkowski gets 10 more receptions in Super Bowl 55, he will tie Rice, with 11 giving him the record outright.

Could we see any kicking records broken in Super Bowl 55?

The record for the most field goals attempted in a game is five; the most field goals in a single game is four. The longest Super Bowl field goal made is from 54 yards. In terms of extra points, three kickers are tied with seven converted extra points.

Bradley Pinion has been a superb punter for the Buccaneers this season. He could threaten the record for the most punts inside the 10-yard line, which currently sits at three.

What are the Super Bowl records when it comes to points scored?

The most points scored in a single game is 55 by the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 24. They also set the record for the largest margin of victory (45) in that game. In Super Bowl 22, Washington set the record for the most consecutive points scored with 42. Meanwhile, the most points scored by a losing team actually belongs to Brady as part of the New England Patriots team in Super Bowl 52.

On the other end of the spectrum, the lowest amount of points scored in a Super Bowl is three. The two occasions involved the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl 6 and the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53. The smallest margin of victory in the Super Bowl is one point — when the Giants defeated the Bills 20-19 in Super Bowl 25.

Could we see a kick return record in Super Bowl 55?

Interestingly, a punt has never been returned for a touchdown in a Super Bowl. The longest punt return is 61 yards by Jordan Norwood in Super Bowl 50. Meanwhile, 10 kickoffs have been returned for a touchdown in Super Bowl history. The longest is by Jacoby Jones, which was 108 yards. Additionally, the only opening kickoff to ever be returned for a touchdown was by Devin Hester in Super Bowl 41.
