App State vs. Louisiana | 2021 Sun Belt Championship Game pick and prediction

  • Spread: Appalachian State -2.5
  • Total: 53
  • Moneyline: Appalachian State -140, Louisiana +120

When Appalachian State and Louisiana met last on October 12, the Ragin’ Cajuns raged past their Sun Belt brethren, demolishing the Mountaineers to the tune of 41-13. Since then, however, Louisiana has squeaked by teams such as Arkansas State, Georgia State, and Louisiana-Monroe. App State, meanwhile, has beaten five straight teams by 24 points or more. They dethroned Coastal Carolina one week after the Louisiana loss.

It seems as though the tides for these two teams have shifted since their last clash. But that doesn’t fully explain Appalachian State’s status as a 2.5-point favorite. The tumult surrounding Louisiana’s coaching situation might. Napier is set to leave for Florida soon — but for now, he’s still with the Cajuns, coaching in the conference finale.

Louisiana’s offense is still potent, but the gap between these two teams has closed. The over is a tempting bet.

App State offense vs. Louisiana defense

The key matchup here is App State’s receivers vs. Louisiana’s defensive backs. Corey Sutton, Malik Williams, and Thomas Hennigan make up one of the most dangerous trios in the conference.

Meanwhile, Mekhi Gardner, Percy Butler, and Bralen Trahan all have the ability to make plays in coverage.

Chase Brice vs. Louisiana secondary

App State’s receivers provide a lot of value, but at the end of the day, it’s up to Chase Brice to get the ball their way. Last time he played Louisiana, Brice tossed 2 picks. The Cajuns’ secondary could cause problems for him again.

Louisiana offense vs. App State defense

On the flip side, Louisiana’s offense has a major test in App State’s defense. There isn’t a single yardage funnel on Louisiana’s offense, but several players deserve watchful eyes. Redshirt-freshman receiver Kyren Lacy, in particular, has been a catalyst for Napier’s squad this season.

Levi Lewis vs. App State secondary

Lewis has been efficient all year, but he rarely passes for over 200 yards. When he’s forced to pass to stay in the game, he can be more volatile. For Trey Cobb, Steven Jones, and Shaun Jolly, that may mean added opportunities on Saturday.
