Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Says ‘We’re Going in the Wrong Direction’ After Storm Over Him Holding Arsenal Cup

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank is increasingly under pressure to lose his job, having guided his side to just two wins in their last 12 league games. And, he was bizarrely seen drinking out of an Arsenal-branded cup earlier on Wednesday, Jan. 7.

But, the former Brentford and Brondby manager has since clarified about his recent gaffe.

Tottenham Hotspur Boss Reacts to Arsenal Cup Incident

Before Tottenham’s 3-2 Premier League defeat against Bournemouth, Frank was pictured holding a coffee cup bearing Arsenal’s crest. And, Spurs fans took to social media to point out their head coach’s mishap of being seen with a merchandise of their fiercest rivals.

During a post-match press conference, the Dane was asked to shed light on the incident.

“I definitely did not notice it. It would be completely stupid of me to take it if I knew. It’s a little bit sad in football that I need to be asked about it. I would never do something that stupid. I think we’re definitely going in the wrong direction if we need to worry about me having a cup with a logo of another club,” Frank replied.

Decoding the incident, Bournemouth hosted Arsenal at Vitality Stadium earlier on Saturday, Jan. 3. And, the Tottenham head coach could have mistakenly grabbed the Arsenal-branded cup, left in the Vitality Stadium’s locker room, with no intention of upsetting Spurs fans.

Following Frank’s mishap, Mathys Tel scored the opener in the fifth minute for Tottenham in their match at Vitality Stadium. Evanilson and Eli Junior Kroupi scored one goal each before Joao Palhinha equalised for Spurs. However, Antoine Semenyo found the back of the net in the fifth minute of injury time to help Bournemouth clinch all three points at home.

Meanwhile, Spurs are languishing in 14th spot in the 2025-26 Premier League table with 27 points from 21 games, boasting a goal difference of +3. The north London outfit are 11th in the UEFA Champions League standings with 11 points from six continental matches.

Ex-Tottenham Boss Opines on Thomas Frank’s Future

After the end of his former team’s recent game at Bournemouth, ex-Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood asserted he would not be shocked if Frank is sacked in the near future.

“It’s a tough time for the Tottenham players and certainly a tough time for Thomas Frank right now. They’re not winning games and they’re not playing good football. I worry for him, I really do. I hope they give him more time but I wouldn’t be surprised if he got sacked,” Sherwood told Sky Sports.

Spurs will next face Aston Villa in a FA Cup third round contest on Saturday, Jan. 10 before locking horns with London rivals West Ham United in the Premier League on Jan. 17.
