San Francisco 49ers News Today

While the 49ers might be feeling some buyer’s remorse with Samuel, they must make a decision on Aiyuk soon. If they can’t reach an agreement on a contract extension with Aiyuk, San Francisco might be forced to trade their rising star WR. All of that and more in today’s 49ers news!

NFL Trade Rumors: Brandon Aiyuk Could Be Available if No Contract Extension With 49ers

The NFL‘s wide receiver market is going to skyrocket this offseason as several young wide receivers are set to sign massive contract extensions. As the 49ers move forward, they need to make a critical decision regarding Aiyuk’s status in San Francisco.

It won’t be an easy one, considering that the 49ers already have significant money committed to other skill-position players such as Christian McCaffrey, Samuel, and George Kittle. If San Francisco is unable to strike a deal with Aiyuk, he could be on the move.

49ers Set To Elevate Nick Sorensen to DC, Hire Brandon Staley to Staff

Following a lengthy search for their next defensive coordinator, the 49ers decided to promote Nick Sorensen from within to fill the void. Sorensen was formerly San Francisco’s defensive pass game specialist and nickel cornerbacks coach.

However, that wasn’t the only move that the 49ers made on their coaching staff. They also hired former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as the team’s assistant head coach. Given Sorensen’s inexperience calling plays in the NFL, Staley will offer much-needed assistance given his time as both a defensive coordinator and head coach.

49ers Held Formal Interviews With Multiple O-Line Prospects

49ers starting LT Trent Williams is 35 years old and has three seasons remaining on his current contract. Although the veteran has shown no signs of slowing down and continues to perform at an elite level, San Francisco must consider selecting his eventual replacement in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Given the struggles of starting RT Colton McKivitz, the 49ers can select an offensive tackle to start in place of him now and eventually replace Williams at left tackle. According to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area, San Francisco had formal meetings with several of the top offensive line prospects at the 2024 NFL Combine.
