The Chicago Bears cleaned house in the offseason, bringing in former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to be the new head coach. After revitalizing the Lions’ offense, Johnson was tasked with breathing life back into a Bears offense that seemed to have most of the pieces already in place to succeed.
While they’ve gotten off to a 5-3 start during the 2025 NFL season, it hasn’t come easily, as the offense has faced some growing pains over the past few weeks. However, after an impressive start to the season, the family member of one of the offensive weapons spoke out on social media.
Rome Odunze’s Father Sparks Trade Rumors After Repost on X
Second-year wide receiver Rome Odunze had gotten off to a hot start to begin the season. Through the first four weeks, Odunze had hauled in 20 passes for 296 yards and five touchdowns. It seemed like a blistering pace, which was a welcome sign for the young receiver after catching 54 passes for 734 yards and three touchdowns during his rookie campaign.
However, the pace cooled off dramatically following the bye week, catching just four passes for 63 yards over the next two weeks. He bounced back in Week 8 with a productive outing against the Baltimore Ravens, hauling in seven of ten targets for 114 yards, but the good outing didn’t carry over against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9, where Odunze was blanked. According to PFSN’s WR Impact metric, the Bears’ star is currently the 34th-best receiver in the league.
While he was targeted three times, it was the lowest total of the season, as outside of the ten-target outing against the Ravens in Week 8, the receivers’ load has decreased dramatically. While nothing has come from Odunze himself, his father, James, reposted an interesting post on X following the no catch outing.

Posting a thumbtack emoji, Odunze’s dad quoted a post on X that read, “Can the Bears trade Rome Odunze to a team that will actually throw to him?” The feelings are interesting as it seemed Odunze had been the preferred target before the bye week. However, emotions could be high after his son was held without a catch against the Bengals in Week 9.

It will be interesting to see how this situation evolves. Again, Odunze himself has not made any comments; however, could his dad be defending his son by stating his feelings for him? The wide receiver’s career is exceptionally young, and he has just been paired with what many consider an offensive genius in Johnson. It would be surprising to see Odunze go anywhere so soon.

Dude dropped two very catchable balls…
