After a promising pair of NFL seasons in 2019 and 2020, where are the potential landing spots for free agent RB Rex Burkhead? Let’s take a look at some of the potential destinations for Burkhead in the offseason.
Rex Burkhead Landing Spots
Burkhead has been an interesting contributor for the New England Patriots over the last four years. So often an afterthought, he has made some big impacts, without ever really putting together impressive statistics.
The Arizona Cardinals need a partner for Chase Edmonds
Burkhead could be an interesting partner for Chase Edmonds in Arizona. Burkhead has been comfortable carrying the ball and working in the receiving game during his time in New England. If the Cardinals do not add another top-tier back, then Rex Burkhead could see a solid workload behind Edmonds, which could make this an ideal landing spot for him.
The Las Vegas Raiders need to find a backup for Josh Jacobs
The loss of Devontae Booker in free agency has left the Raiders searching for an option to backup Josh Jacobs. Last year, Booker provided a boost to the Raiders’ offense when he needed to replace Jacobs. Burkhead has proven he can make plays in the run and pass game, making him an ideal back to partner with Jacobs. It might not be the most exciting option, but Burkhead has proven he can be a solid contributor.
Could the Miami Dolphins bring in Burkhead as an option for their backfield?
The Dolphins need to bring in a veteran option to backup Myles Gaskin. The Dolphins have a solid lead back in Gaskin, but they need some experience to go with it. What also makes this an ideal landing spot for Rex Burkhead is his familiarity with the Dolphins coaching staff from their time in New England.
Rex Burkhead could be a candidate to backup Christian McCaffrey in Carolina
Burkhead could make for a fascinating backup in Carolina behind Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey is a player that is a threat in both aspects of the game. That is something that we have seen Burkhead do during his four seasons in New England.
Burkhead is not a player that has proven to be capable of managing the workload of a starting back for an entire season, but as a backup, he certainly could. Could we see Burkhead go into Carolina and put up big numbers before hitting free agency again in 2022?
Could Burkhead return to New England?
The New England Patriots seem to really like Rex Burkhead, but there are a lot of reasons this is not an ideal landing spot for him personally. The Patriots have never seemed willing to commit to Burkhead as a starter. Therefore, remaining in New England would limit the potential upside of a future deal.
Burkhead would likely be better off making the jump to leave New England. If he could wind up in a backup role elsewhere, then he could turn a potential opportunity into a big-money deal next offseason.
What is Rex Burkhead’s market value in free agency in 2021?
It is unlikely any potential landing spot for Rex Burkhead is going to pay the free agent a big-money deal in 2021. In the last four seasons, Burkhead has averaged 256.5 rushing yards and 2.75 rushing touchdowns per season. He has added just 214 receiving yards and 1.75 receiving touchdowns per season.
Therefore, it is hard to see a team paying Burkhead much more than the $3 million he earned with the Patriots in 2020. Over the last four years with the Patriots, Burkhead has earned an average of just over $3 million. It will be interesting to see whether a market emerges for Rex Burkhead as a free agent or if he ends up heading back to New England on a relatively team-friendly deal.
