While injuries to tight ends and quarterbacks often do not grab the headlines when it comes to fantasy football, certain players can have a huge impact. Let’s examine the latest injury updates at both positions in our QB and TE injury report for Week 2 of the 2022 NFL season and examine the fantasy football impact.
TE injury report heading into Week 2
George Kittle, SF | Groin
Update: George Kittle was a non-participant for a fifth straight practice Thursday.
For the fourth-straight practice, George Kittle remained a non-participant with a groin injury. He missed the 49ers first game of the season in Chicago, and it is highly questionable as to whether we will see him in Week 2. The injury was reportedly suffered on the Monday of Week 1, so a two-week absence would be reasonable.
Kittle told Taylor Bisciotti of NFL Network that his goal is to play this week and that he feels “a lot better than last week.” If Kittle misses the game, there are no tight ends on this roster that have immediate fantasy value., Instead, fantasy managers will need to look towards finding a TE streamer for Week 2.
QB injury report heading into Week 2
Jameis Winston, NO | Back
In the midst of a fantastic game against the Atlanta Falcons last week, it somewhat went under the radar that Jameis Winston was briefly taken into the blue medical tent during the game. Winston was limited during practice on Wednesday, but head coach Dennis Allen said he was able to move around out there and “looked pretty good doing it.”
There does not seem to be immediate concern about Winston coming out of New Orleans. However, if he is somewhat limited on Sunday, that could be a major issue against the strong pass rush and high-quality secondary of his former team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Winston is limited, that would also impact the fantasy value of the Saints’ wide receivers this week.
Mac Jones, NE | Back
Update: Mac Jones missed Thursday’s practice with an illness. The absence is not related to his back injury.
After the New England Patriots’ Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins, Mac Jones was reported to be struggling with a back injury. While x-rays came back negative, there were still concerns he could miss time. We found out Wednesday that Jones was dealing with back spasms last week and has a chance to play in Week 2. He was at practice on Wednesday and managed to get in a full practice. However, back injuries can be tricky, so this might not be the last we hear of the injury.
If Jones is active, then Jakobi Meyers remains a fringe fantasy option in PPR formats only. Without Jones, it is hard to see where there is any Patriots pass catcher worth starting consideration for Week 2 in 12 or 14-team leagues.
Zach Wilson, NYJ | Knee
Despite Robert Saleh saying that Zach Wilson would not be back until Week 4, the New York Jets QB was able to return to the practice field Wednesday. He practiced in a limited fashion, but there has been no update on the timetable that Wilson is expected back on the field no earlier than Week 4. Joe Flacco should remain the starter, and we could continue to see targets spread around the offense.
