Philadelphia Eagles OL Depth Chart: Will Cam Jurgens Start at RG?

When looking at the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line depth chart, four positions have locked-in starters. But who will start at right guard?

Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is responsible for one of the best units in the NFL. Since his arrival in 2013, Stoutland has done a tremendous job turning Philadelphia’s offensive line room into an elite group that is loaded with talent.

Philadelphia’s core four of Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Jason Kelce, and Lane Johnson are locked in as starters. But following the departure of Isaac Seumalo in free agency to the Pittsburgh Steelers, there’s an opening at right guard. Who will Stoutland select to fill that void next season?

    • Jordan Mailata
    • Landon Dickerson
    • Jason Kelce
    • Cam Jurgens
    • Lane Johnson
    • Tyler Steen
    • Jack Driscoll
    • Brett Toth
    • Sua Opeta
    • Roderick Johnson
    • Fred Johnson
    • Julian Good-Jones
    • Tyrese Robinson
    • Cameron Tom
    • Trevor Reid
    • Chim Okorafor

It will be interesting to see who wins the starting RG job. Stoutland is widely regarded as a phenomenal developmental coach, which is evident by Jordan Mailata’s performance. While some are quick to list Cam Jurgens as the favorite to start at right guard, there are certainly questions about the second-year offensive lineman.

Jurgens was selected in Round 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft to be Jason Kelce’s eventual replacement. Jurgens only played center at Nebraska and was never used at guard by the Eagles last season. While Kelce is an iron man that is rarely injured, Jurgens will fill his shoes whenever he’s gone. Thus, it’s fair to question if Philadelphia starting Jurgens at RG would be the smart thing to do.

Tyler Steen would likely make more sense. Philadelphia selected Steen in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and spent an extensive amount of time discussing the switch to guard with various offensive tackle prospects. After Stoutland’s success with Dickerson at left guard, the Eagles could be looking for a bigger body to start at right guard.

Although Steen has never played guard, many believed his best fit in the NFL would be to move inside from offensive tackle. Steen has a massive frame at 6’6” and 321 pounds, which could make him a significantly better fit at right guard if Stoutland is looking for the next Dickerson. It will be interesting to see who wins the starting job, but Steen has a clear size advantage over Jurgens.

    Stoutland University’s Newest Students

Due to his impressive ability to develop offensive linemen, Stoutland’s group notably nicknamed their room “Stoutland University” with t-shirts to match.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has made a few intriguing additions to the offensive line this offseason. While Steen is the most notable and likely to start immediately, Trevor Reid and Chim Okorafor are worth watching as well.

There are legitimate concerns about Philadelphia’s depth, especially at offensive tackle. Both Reid and Okorafor offer intriguing upside as the next students to enroll at Stoutland University.

Many believed Reid would be a late Day 3 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Yet, he went undrafted and wisely chose to sign with the Eagles, where they could certainly use a prospect with his potential. Reid put on a show at his pro day, including a 38” vertical jump and a 4.90 40-yard dash.
