NFL Insider Reveals Why Patriots Won’t Pursue Star WR Tee Higgins Despite $128,071,728 in Cap Space

Teams are looking to make significant changes in the offseason, and massive opportunities exist for a team like the New England Patriots. They have plenty of cap space to make a splash in free agency, with players like Tee Higgins becoming available.

However, for those looking for excitement, don’t expect them to go all-in on Higgins. Despite holding an NFL-high $128 million in cap room, the Patriots are reportedly not in the mix for the star wide receiver, and their reasons aren’t surprising.

New England Patriots Plan to Pass on Bringing Tee Higgins Onboard

New England is focusing on building through the trenches as they reshape the roster under Mike Vrabel. The changes mean investing heavily in the offensive and defensive lines rather than splurging on a big-name receiver. Despite the expectations, Patriots executive Eliot Wolf made it clear at the NFL Scouting Combine that the team’s philosophy remains rooted in winning at the line of scrimmage.

“The game is always won on the lines — offensive line, defensive line,” Wolf said. “Not just because of the [Philadelphia Eagles in the] Super Bowl — it’s always been that way.”

While the Patriots are in desperate need of offensive weapons, some around the league are skeptical that Higgins is worth the $30 million per season he’s expected to command. Only six wide receivers have ever reached that annual salary mark- Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, A.J. Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Tyreek Hill, and Brandon Aiyuk. Higgins, despite his talent, hasn’t consistently produced at their level. Over the last two seasons, he’s struggled with injuries, playing just 12 games in each campaign.

Cincinnati placed the franchise tag on Higgins for 2024, locking him in for a fully guaranteed $21.8 million. If the Bengals tag him again next year, his salary would jump north of $26 million, still a relative bargain compared to the open-market projections.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that most league executives believe Higgins would easily surpass $30 million annually if he becomes available. However, that’s a price the Patriots seem unwilling to pay.

Even though New England desperately needs a true WR1, the team appears content to search for other options. Cherry on top, the upcoming draft class is deep with talented receivers, giving them a chance to find a playmaker at a much lower cost. Additionally, the free agent market still offers alternatives that won’t break the bank.

If Higgins hits the open market, teams like the Tennessee Titans and others could push for his services. However, unless something drastically changes, don’t expect the Patriots to be in the bidding war. Their strategy revolves around fortifying the offensive and defensive lines, not making a blockbuster signing at wide receiver, at least according to the latest updates.
