With their eyes firmly on the postseason, the New England Patriots appear to have a bright future ahead of them. On a team filled with young playmakers who have not reached their respective ceilings, adding to the roster would only help solidify them as the team to beat in the AFC for years to come.

New England Patriots Encouraged to Sign WR George Pickens in Offseason
While enjoying a breakout season, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens can also look towards his future. If he chooses, Pickens will become an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season, opening the door to multiple lucrative opportunities. Yet, one editor believes that he could change the landscape for the Patriots.
For the price of a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round selection, the Cowboys took a flyer on the wide receiver. So far, Pickens has exceeded the draft collateral. In 12 games, the 24-year-old wide receiver has grabbed 73 catches, 1,142 yards, and eight touchdowns, all career highs. Pickens ranks third on PFSN’s NFL WR Impact metric, which measures a receiver’s production and how he plays a role within the offense.
Becoming one of the league’s most productive wideouts transformed the Cowboys’ offense. At 29.3 points per game, Dallas boasts the second-most points per game.
Meanwhile, the Patriots, leading the AFC with 11 wins, could look towards the future, signing Pickens to a monster deal when free agency opens up in March. Alex Kennedy, deputy editor at PFSN, discussed this.

“George Pickens will be a free agent this offseason, and Alex Kennedy says the Patriots need to back up the Brink’s truck for the Cowboys receiver.”
The Patriots are projected to have at least $50 million in cap space and as many as 11 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Kennedy notes that if the team can add more talent around Drake Maye and the current roster, their potential success could increase.
With an 11-2 record and a top ten passing offense, some may wonder why New England should allocate a sizable chunk of their salary cap to a free agent receiver. There are a few reasons. First, leading receiver Stefon Diggs just turned 32. Depending on a receiver who is not speed-based and is on the back side of 30 could be dangerous long-term.
Signing Pickens would allow Diggs to slide to the second-receiver spot. Additionally, Drake Maye, at 23 years old, looks like he could be a franchise quarterback, their first since Tom Brady left. Adding a potential perennial Pro Bowler who won’t turn 25 until March could be the franchise-altering move to help the Patriots stay among the AFC elite.
Spotrac projects Pickens could command $30.7 million. With $50 million in cap space, New England could pursue him. Pickens, now known for his back-shoulder catches, has improved his hands: six drops on 103 targets last season compared to three in 105 this year.
Dallas will likely try to retain Pickens long-term, possibly using the franchise tag. Still, playing with a younger quarterback on an emerging team could tempt him.
