Patrick Mahomes Injury Update: Encouraging signs ahead of Monday Night Football

What is the latest injury update for Patrick Mahomes after the Chiefs QB took a hit to the head late in their game against Tennessee?

Kansas City Chiefs fans and team members alike held their breath last Sunday when Patrick Mahomes stayed down on the field with what appeared to be a head injury. The injury happened as Mahomes was trying to make a play late in the fourth quarter and took a hit to the head as he was falling with a defender draped around his legs.

Patrick Mahomes was initially feared to have suffered a concussion

The immediate fear for Mahomes was around the hit to the head and a potential concussion. The Chiefs QB took his time getting back up and slowly headed to the sideline. When asked about it, Mahomes explained why he was slow to get up in the post-game press conference.

“When you get hit pretty hard, sometimes you want to lay there. Plus it was fourth down and I knew the game was kind of at the end there. It was a disappointing day and a disappointing way to end it.”

Mahomes was then taken to the blue tent and assessed. Despite clearing the concussion protocol, Mahomes did not return to the field, which raised some eyebrows.

However, it was confirmed after the game that Mahomes had passed the check and could have returned if required. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid decided that with the team trailing 27-3 in the fourth quarter and his star QB having narrowly avoided injury, it was not worth the risk of him returning to the game.

Mahomes was not listed on the Chiefs injury report

With the Chiefs not playing until Monday Night Football against the Giants, we had to wait a little bit longer this week to hear about Mahomes’ status. In a normal week, we would have got an indication on a Wednesday whether Mahomes was back at practice, but this week that did not come until Thursday.

However, the news this week was all positive. Mahomes was a full participant at practice all week. He did not even appear on the Chiefs’ injury report in Week 8. Barring some sort of injury ahead of Monday Night Football, Mahomes will be leading the Chiefs this week.

Opportunity to bounce back against the Giants

Usually, a Week 8 game against the Giants would not be all that key for Mahomes. However, the Chiefs are 3-4 and cannot afford to lose many more contests this season. They may have already lost too many to even be in consideration for the No. 1 seed in the AFC in 2021.

With losses to both the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans, the Chiefs need to lead both teams by at least one game at the end of the season. Therefore, every game between now and the end of the season is crucial. The expectation is that the No. 1 seed in the AFC will be held by a team losing around four or five games. Thus, Mahomes and the Chiefs need to be perfect for the remaining 10 games this season.
