The Green Bay Packers drafted two shiny new wide receivers during the first two days of the 2025 NFL Draft. Many believed Green Bay’s receiving options to be subpar in recent years, and a recent PFSN article of possible trade and cut candidates has predicted the team to part ways with one of its current pass-catchers.
Packers Draft 2 Wide Receivers in Opening 3 Rounds of 2025 NFL Draft
The Packers crashed out of the playoffs back in January with each of their top three receivers injured by the end of the game. The team’s No. 1 receiver, Christian Watson, has been a regular absentee due to various injuries and was again unavailable for the Packers when it mattered most.
Watson’s deep-ball prowess has allowed players like Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs to find opportunities against thinly spread defenses. Watson’s continued absences, though, which will likely continue long into the 2025 season, have left Green Bay somewhat toothless in the passing game.
The Packers selected Texas prospect Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 draft, before adding versatile playmaker Savion Williams in the third. Golden is more likely to fill the Watson role, due to his contested catch ability and lightning speed on the perimeter.
Green Bay’s decision to add another receiver on Day 2, however, suggests an overall unhappiness with the team’s options.
Packers Predicted To Move On From Romeo Doubs
Third-round picks are no guarantee in the NFL, but the Packers’ decision to draft Williams, having already added Golden, suggests a shake-up could be on the cards in Green Bay. While Doubs has been a consistent option for the Packers since being drafted in 2022, his two separate concussions last season had his head coach concerned.
“I’m concerned, absolutely. But I haven’t talked to our medical people. I haven’t sat down with them about whether there’s long-term concern, but anytime a guy gets two concussions, I can’t help but be concerned by that.”
Those were Matt LaFleur’s words following the team’s Wild Card loss to Philadelphia. With Doubs also heading into a contract year, PFSN’s Sterling Xie has suggested that the receiver may find himself on a new team in 2025.
“PFSN had Romeo Doubs as a prime Green Bay Packers trade candidate before the draft. Then, Brian Gutekunst drafted the franchise’s first first-round wide receiver in 23 years, while also adding another receiver in the third round.
“Matthew Golden and Savion Williams now make for an extremely crowded receiver room. With Doubs entering the last year of his contract, the Packers’ draft picks indicate that he’s likely done with the team after 2025, particularly with Jayden Reed and Christian Watson also due for extensions.
“In fairness, Watson’s torn ACL from Week 18 could be what saves Doubs’ roster spot in the short term. It’s possible Watson misses a large chunk of 2025. If that happens, the Packers may not feel comfortable relying on a pair of rookies to play meaningful snaps right away. Still, Doubs will need to earn his role in the preseason and could prove expendable if the rookies play well early and/or if Watson recovers faster than expected.”
