At 26, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is already one of track’s most decorated athletes, with four Olympic golds, multiple world records, and World Championship medals. Her relentless drive and pursuit of excellence define her among the sport’s elite. What motivates her to keep pushing beyond her achievements?
Recently crowned the 400m flat world champion, McLaughlin-Levrone revealed the mentality behind her ongoing success: she is driven by being ‘never satisfied’ and always striving for more.
What Did Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Reveal About Her Path To Success?
This season, McLaughlin-Levrone came close to breaking the 400m flat world record held by East Germany’s Marita Koch, which was set in 1985. This achievement is even more impressive because she transitioned to the 400m flat from the 400m hurdles this season.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, McLaughlin-Levrone emphasized her desire to continually push past her limits, driven by a mindset of continuous improvement despite her numerous achievements.
“There’s just a certain desire to pursue excellence in whatever I do. Though I’m grateful for where I’ve been and what I’ve achieved, I’m never satisfied. It’s not always the healthiest, I think. But it’s this desire to always be better and to figure out what those little things are that can help me improve. Everybody can train, but what gives you the edge is the mental side. The willingness to push that little bit further, faster, for longer.”
Following her impressive season, McLaughlin-Levrone was nominated for one of World Athletics’ biggest honors, the Female Track Athlete of the Year Award. Her 400m hurdles rival, Femke Bol, was also named as a nominee, with the winner to be announced on November 30.
McLaughlin-Levrone Discusses Why She Transitioned To 400m Flat This Season
McLaughlin-Levrone burst onto the scene at just 15, blazing to a world youth best of 55.28 seconds in the 400m hurdles. Her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games cemented her status as a rising star in the event.
With her dominance in the hurdles, few expected McLaughlin-Levrone to switch to the 400m flat this season. Her motivation? A heartfelt urge to embrace a fresh challenge, as she explained in an interview with USA Today:
“Two years ago when I pursued it in 2023, I just wasn’t able to make it to the World Championships due to injury. Circling back this year, I felt this tug on my heart to really pursue it again. So just wanting to push myself through that challenge, and I’m grateful for how it turned out.”
Given her stellar performances this season, McLaughlin-Levrone may soon test her limits in new events, perhaps even the 800m. Her unwavering drive to evolve and seek out fresh challenges is a key reason she reigns at the pinnacle of her sport.
