‘They Were The Ones That Were There’ – Suni Lee Reveals Support System During Mental Health Journey

Gymnastics star Suni Lee is using her break from the sport to prioritize her mental well-being and support others, focusing on both new ventures and quality time with close friends and family. Recently, Lee shared how she checks in on her friends’ mental health, noting the importance of reciprocal support during challenging times.

Lee discussed the topic at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards on November 4, where she turned heads by wearing a stylish red outfit.

What Did Suni Lee Say About Checking In On Her Friends?

Lee revealed that she likes to send a nice text or flowers to a friend who’s struggling mentally during an interview at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards. The Olympian was also named one of the Women of the Year at the 2025 award ceremony.

“For me, I love to do daily check-ins. I mean I call my friends every single day, even if it’s just like for a short second. But I also love sending them things, whether it’s sending them flowers or a nice text everyday, and just making sure that they’re okay. Because I know for me, when I was struggling they were the ones that were there for me, and I love to just offer out all my love and everything else to anybody that needs it.”

Lee has spoken openly about mental health, previously describing anxiety attacks at meets brought on by her rising profile. As she steps back from gymnastics, she reports that the break has improved her well-being.

Lee Opens Up On How She Takes Care Of Her Mental Health

Since competing in Paris in 2025, Lee has taken the time to expand her career beyond gymnastics, including ventures into the fashion and beauty industries. Due to her new commitments, Lee has moved to New York City and opened up about how she takes care of her mental health now.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine, she said:

“I’ve been doing a lot of journaling and trying to keep all of my friendships really close. I feel like during this time; where I’m transitioning out of gymnastics and into different careers, being in a different city without my family and my friends; it’s been a really hard change and a really big adjustment for me. So I’ve just been talking to them every day.”

Lee has yet to decide whether she will make a comeback to gymnastics and compete in her third Olympic appearance in 2028. With the way her fashion career has taken off, though, it could be a while before we see any developments on the matter.
