Melissa Jefferson-Wooden dominated the 2025 track season, capturing three gold medals at the World Championships and becoming the fastest woman of the year in both the 100m and 200m. Yet, when the list of finalists for World Athletics’ 2025 Female Track Athlete of the Year was announced, her name was nowhere to be found.
The snub, which saw Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Femke Bol advance, left many stunned, but a powerful tribute from Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, provided a different kind of recognition.
How Did Alexis Ohanian’s Athlos Track Meet Respond to the Snub?
Following the controversial decision, Alexis Ohanian’s new women’s-only track meet, Athlos, quickly came to Melissa Jefferson-Wooden’s defense. In a pointed Instagram post, Athlos shared a photo of the 24-year-old proudly displaying her three gold medals from World Championships. The post was accompanied by a simple, yet powerful, caption: “Receipts 🧾.”
The gesture clearly resonated with the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m world champions. Jefferson-Wooden responded emotionally in the comments section with: “🥹🫶🏾.”

Her comment also drew a warm reaction from Kenyan star Beatrice Chebet, who had her own outstanding season. Chebet broke the 5000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic and won double gold in the 5000m and 10,000m at the World Championships in Tokyo. Like Jefferson-Wooden, Chebet was also left off the finalists’ list. She replied to Jefferson-Wooden’s comment with a message of solidarity, writing: “@__melissaj19 ❤️❤️🫂.”
The Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medalist in the 100m had previously decided not to compete at the inaugural Athlos meet in 2025. In early October, she announced she would take time off to rest and recover after an intense season. However, she still showed her support for fellow athletes by attending the event in a stylish all-black look.
How Did Jefferson-Wooden’s Ambitions Grow Throughout the 2025 Season?
After her historic triple-gold performance, Jefferson-Wooden revealed that her coaches were caught off guard by her initial goals for the 2025 season. In an interview with World Athletics, she explained how she pushed to add the 200m to her focus. “At the beginning of the year, I told my coaches that I wanted to take the 200m more seriously. They both kind of looked at each other, like: ‘Did y’all hear what she just said? Is she serious?'”
That initial ambition set the stage for a remarkable run. From that point, her goals evolved step by step, from making the U.S. team to winning at the national trials, and ultimately, to securing three gold medals on the world’s biggest stage.
