Aleksander Kilde’s return to competition carries a familiar note of resilience. One that mirrors the grit long embodied by his fiancée, Mikaela Shiffrin. Days after sharing reflections on the emotional and physical journey back to the sport he loves, the Norwegian skiing star launched himself back into the World Cup field at Copper Mountain, Colorado. It’s a milestone moment for Kilde, whose terrifying crash in Wengen in early 2024 once threatened to sideline his Olympic dreams for Milan Cortina.
Mikaela Shiffrin’s Fiancé Aleksander Kilde Shares Inspirational Message On Return From Crash
Kilde took to Instagram to post a series of photos from his recent trip to the United States for skiing. The World Cup veteran also offered insight into his mindset, noting in the caption that he views this stage of his return as merely the start of what’s ahead.
“I’m back in Europe after what has been one of the most memorable trips of my life. I’ve transformed from a “patient” back to being an athlete, and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. This is just the beginning, and I’m feeling lucky to be where I am at right now and can’t wait for next steps #weareskiing #ad #fisalpine @fisalpine”
Kilde’s road back has been anything but easy. His crash during the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen, Switzerland, in January 2024 was terrifying. He lost control before the final jump, slammed into the safety nets, and suffered a dislocated shoulder along with a severe calf laceration that required emergency surgery for nerve damage. The injuries left his career in serious doubt.
Kilde had left a solid impact in his third Olympic outing at the 2022 Beijing edition. The 33-year-old had clinched a silver medal in the men’s alpine combined event and a bronze medal in the men’s Super G event.
When Kilde Spoke About Shiffrin’s Consistent Support During her Comeback
Kilde has often credited Shiffrin for helping him navigate the darkest moments of his recovery. The pair, who have been together since 2020 and were engaged as of July 2024, have become one of skiing’s most admired partnerships.
The two-time Olympic medalist opened up about how Shiffrin never left his side. In his interview with the Bluewin portal, Kilde described,
“She has supported me from day one. Not only personally, but also as an athlete. I’m glad that I can share so much with her. The support I’ve gotten from her has been insane. I love her.”
Meanwhile, at the same World Cup stop in Colorado, Shiffrin officially secured her spot for next year’s Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina. The former Olympic champion is seeking redemption after missing the podium entirely at the 2022 Games in Beijing.
Despite a challenging fourth-place finish in the Tremblant giant slalom, Shiffrin remains upbeat about her form. Still working through confidence issues after a violent crash in Killington earlier in the 2024–25 season, one that left her with a severe abdominal puncture, the American star believes she is “within range” of the podium again. She admits minor errors remain, but is encouraged by her trajectory and promises to bring “higher intensity” moving forward.
