The Minnesota Wild started this season with massive expectations. With the franchise re-signing star player Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year, $136 million deal, everyone had their eyes on what the Russian does for his team once the campaign begins.
But so far into their run, the Wild have won just four of their 13 games and have failed to win back-to-back even once this season. While Kaprizov remains his team’s best player, one insider believes that the time might already be running out on Minnesota’s campaign.
Minnesota Wild Continues To Stand on Thin Ice despite Kirill Kaprizov’s Performance
When Kaprizov signed a contract extension with the Wild back in September, everyone was excited for two reasons. The first was obviously because Minnesota had just created history by giving its star winger the biggest deal in NHL history.
However, the fans also expected a great season from Kaprizov after this deal. So far in the season, he has lived up to the expectations somewhat with 16 points (seven goals, nine assists). But despite his best efforts, he has been unable to be the factor to drag his team to a win.
The Athletic’s James Mirtle also believes that the Wild are running out of time. He noted that before this season started, he also thought Minnesota would dominate the Central Division. But so far, the franchise has been unable to sustain a single win to their next game.
“I really thought this was going to be a big season for the Wild, with better health than a year ago and some intriguing young players joining the big club, but it’s been a mess of a start,” Mirtle said. After their latest defeat, they have one of the worst records in the current season.
Mirtle also pointed out that their underlying numbers aren’t great either. He continued, “If there’s reason for optimism, it’s that their shooting percentage is so low; goals should come easier in the weeks to come.”
But he also warned that they will need to find their play soon; otherwise, with Utah looking to dominate this season, they might very well be knocked out of the playoff race early.
The Mammoth, despite losing its last two games, has the longest winning streak this season with seven wins. While back-to-back losses against the Oilers and the Lightning have dampened their spirits, the talent in the team is undeniable.
They have already scored wins over the likes of the Avalanche and the Flames and have, in their only meeting of the season so far, comfortably beaten the Wild 6-2. While Kaprizov has remained productive, he needs to perform better, or else the Wild might be in serious trouble.
