$33,000,000 LA Kings Center’s Agent Lashes Out at NHL Insider’s Report on Trade Chatter

LA Kings center’s trade rumors spark controversy as his agent lashes out at NHL insider report amid a challenging season.

The Los Angeles Kings have been carefully managing their roster this season, making strategic adjustments to balance injuries and maintain team depth. New faces, trades, and call-ups have come in as the organization works to stay competitive in the tightly packed Pacific Division.

Despite staying in contention, the season has been uneven. Close games, overtime losses, and inconsistent results have left the team searching for reliable offensive production. The constant turnover of players has also fueled trade speculation and raised questions about the team’s longer-term strategy.

Phillip Danault Trade Rumors Ignite Agent’s Public Response

Los Angeles made a notable trade in early December, sending Akil Thomas to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for young center Nikita Alexandrov. Earlier, the Kings acquired goaltender Phoenix Copley for future considerations, freeing cap space and creating room for minor-league call-ups. These moves underscore the team’s emphasis on flexibility and depth, as injuries and close contests have defined the season.

Amid these changes, Phillip Danault has emerged at the center of trade speculation. The 32-year-old, drafted 26th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011, plays a crucial defensive role for the Kings. He is signed to a six-year, $33 million contract with a $5.5 million cap hit through the 2026-27 season.

This season, Danault has recorded five assists in 30 games, holding a plus-three rating, though he has yet to score a goal. His contributions are often seen in defensive stability, puck control, and key matchups rather than on the scoresheet.

Trade rumors surged when insider Marco D’Amico shared on X that, “Sources indicate that Phil Danault has asked for a tradein LA. His camp hopes a deal gets done sooner than later; prior to the Trade Freeze. Kings are willing to wait it out, looking for a player-for-player trade. MTL, NJD, and CAR are some of the teams to kicked tires there.”

The report drew attention because of Danault’s large contract and essential role on the team. Danault’s agent, Allan Walsh, quickly responded, resharing the post on X and directly criticizing the report: “You never bothered to check with me. Shameful attention-seeking reporting. #NotAnInsider,” Walsh wrote, underlining the tension that can arise between insiders and player representatives during trade speculation.

The incident highlights how rumors can impact players and teams, particularly when the Kings are navigating both roster adjustments and midseason performance challenges.

In the Pacific Division, the Kings hold a 14-9-9 record, placing them in third place. They have struggled to find consistent offense, averaging 2.59 goals per game. Adrian Kempe has led with 11 goals and 28 points, but scoring from the rest of the team has been uneven.

Defensively, Los Angeles has been more reliable, allowing 2.53 goals per game. Strong goaltending and structured defensive play have kept them competitive, while the penalty kill has remained serviceable.
