How Many Stanley Cup Finals Have Seen Double OT Games? A Look At 2OT Thrillers In League History

The 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Final has been quite exciting.

The two final games played so far have been quite exciting because they’ve both gone into overtime. Given the fact that the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers faced off in last year’s Stanley Cup Final resulting in a rematch this year, it makes sense that the games have been extra dramatic with both teams holding extra motivation due to the rematch.

This is the sixth time in NHL history that the first two games of the series has gone into overtime, which hasn’t happened since 2014.

But just how many Stanley Cup Final games have gone into double overtime?

13 Double Overtimes in NHL History

Overtime in the NHL playoffs is a completely different experience compared to the regular season. Once the third period ends in a tie, the game moves into sudden-death 20-minute periods of five-on-five play, repeated until one team scores. Meaning there is a distinct exclusion of shootouts, three-on-three and time limits.

Friday’s game is on everyone’s mind because of the excitement surrounding Brad Marchand scoring the last two goals for the Panthers in their 5-4 double OT win and leveling the series with the Oilers.

“[Marchand] just finds a way to win,” Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt told ESPN.com. “I don’t think the moment ever gets too big for him.”

Over 90 Stanley Cup Final Games have gone into overtime in general. But, including June 7, 2025, 13 Stanley Cup Finals have gone into double overtime, according to NHL records. Of those 13, three took place during Game 2.

The first double OT in Stanley Cup Final Game 2 history took place on April 5, 1931, between the Montréal Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks. The Canadiens won both the second game 2OT and the Stanley Cup. Following 1931, the next most recent second game double OT was in 2014.

The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2014, and en route to hoisting the trophy, they defeated the New York Rangers 5-4 on June 7.

This brings us back to the present.

Marchand’s second goal of the night, 8:04 into the second OT, allowed Florida to escape with a split after Corey Perry scored to tie it with 17.8 seconds left in the third period and Stuart Skinner pulled for an extra attacker.

“Just don’t forget the puck,” Marchand said. “That’s the main thing. I’ve done that before. It’s not a good feeling.”

Given the OT results, Game 3 promises to be a big momentum changer for the series, no matter who wins. Puck drop is slated for 8 p.m. EST on Monday as the teams travel across the continent to play in Sunrise, Florida. Should game 3 go into overtime as well, it will only be the fifth time in league history that an OT has occurred during the third game of the series.
