The Edmonton Oilers were unlucky when they lost the Stanley Cup to the Florida Panthers in 2024, and when history repeated itself the following year, it seemed like the cruelest of fates.
However, there is one contemporary NHL player, when taken individually, who has been thoroughly the unluckiest when it comes to lifting the prestigious NHL honor. So twisted has been his luck that he has now experienced five failed Stanley Cup conquests with four teams. To pile on this rare failure, the internet seemed to drag him out of nowhere when celebrating an MLB victory.
Fans Drag Ex-Oilers Winger Corey Perry Amid Rare MLB Development
It so happens that in the MLB world, players named “Will Smith” to have won six consecutive World Series. While this is apparently unrelated to the NHL or Corey Perry, social media users have found a way to involve the winger nonetheless, just for the sake of some laughs.
Perry has one Stanley Cup to his credit: one that he won with the Anaheim Ducks years ago in 2006-07. It was an incredible achievement for the veteran winger who was just starting his NHL career. However, the happiness was short-lived as the 40-year-old made several appearances in the finale, having battled the gruesome playoffs, but failed to lift the Cup nonetheless.
Perry lost the Stanley Cup finals five times with four different teams: the Dallas Stars (2020), the Montreal Canadiens (2021), the Tampa Bay Lightning (2022), and the Oilers (2024, 2025). It’s a heartbreak that is incomparable to anything else for an NHL player, but surely, to be ridiculed for it on social media out of nowhere was something Perry could have never anticipated.
A social media user reposted a SportsCenter post about the “Will Smith”-MLB anomaly with the quote, “the anti corey perry”. The drag was utterly unnecessary and one that nobody had seen coming. Another X user could not help but note that the Perry comparison was amusing. “this is genuinely hilarious lmfao.”
Moreover, Perry’s name had popped up in the minds of another social media user, who couldn’t help but think along similar lines. “Yep haha that’s what I was thinking haha.”

However, it is pertinent to note that the same man did not win six consecutive World Series; what made the situation all the more peculiar was the fact that different players bearing the same name, Will Smith, had achieved the feat. When we account for this fact, the pointed comment at Perry seems all the more unwarranted.
