Eastern Conference Heavyweights Linked With Quinn Hughes as Rumors Intensify Around Canucks Captain’s Future

Trade rumors surrounding Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes haven’t slowed down. If anything, they’re getting louder. The chatter picked up even more after Vancouver announced that several veteran players could be moved, following a rough start to the season. The Canucks currently sit second-last in the Pacific Division with a 10-13-3 record and have lost five of their last six games.

Despite the team repeatedly saying Hughes isn’t on the trade block, the speculation hasn’t died down, especially after an NHL analyst threw out a bold suggestion.

Quinn Hughes’ Future in Vancouver Gets Murkier With Latest Rumor

Hughes is currently in the fifth year of his six-year, $47.1 million contract and will be eligible to sign an extension in July. With the Canucks struggling this season, there are growing questions about whether he’ll want to stay long-term. Despite the team’s issues, Hughes has been excellent, leading Vancouver with 22 points in 21 games.

NHL analyst Jeff Marek suggested on X that the Detroit Red Wings could make a major push for Hughes.

“Since there are no game-changing stars available in free agency next summer and the team needs to take the next step, do the Detroit Red Wings step up with a massive offer for Quinn Hughes in exchange for some of their high-end young players/prospects? Pressure has to be huge,” Marek wrote.

Rumors first picked up in the offseason when New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes mentioned that he hopes all three Hughes brothers can play together someday. Jack already shares the ice with their youngest brother, Luke, in New Jersey.

Even Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford acknowledged that family influence could play a role in Quinn’s future. “It may not boil down to money with [Quinn]. He said before, he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control,” Rutherford said.

On ‘The Sheet,’ NHL insider David Pagnotta added fuel to the speculation, also mentioning Detroit as a serious potential suitor. He suggested that if Vancouver were ever to consider moving Hughes, they would demand immediate star-quality pieces in return. “I look to a guy like Lucas Raymond as the centerpiece,” he said.

For now, these are just rumors. Hughes remains a Canuck, and Vancouver’s focus shifts to its next game against Colorado, and their captain still has eight months left to make a decision about where he wants to take his talents, if he fancies a move after all.
