The St. Louis Blues proved unable to get the job done in their opening game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the top-seeded Winnipeg Jets.
Despite enjoying leads of 1-0 and 3-2, the Blues couldn’t protect either of them and ultimately surrendered a trio of third-period goals en route to what was a 5-3 defeat and an 0-1 series deficit.
After the loss, Blues fans took the classic Elton John tune “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” to heart on Saturday night on social media.
Blues Fans React To Game 1 Loss In NHL Playoffs
One fan expressed his disappointment in how the third period went, saying, “An awful 20 minutes when it mattered most.”
Another Blues fan felt that his club wasn’t assertive enough, saying, “No problem with the defensive effort (Winnipeg had tremendous puck luck on the first three goals) but offensively you have to shoot the puck. Pretty good in the dot, plenty of possession, but far too passive offensively.”
One particularly frustrated fan vented, “That third period was a wonderful display on how not to play hockey.”
Yet another Blues fan decided to make light of the situation by saying, “My alarm went off. It was set for 4 past binnington.”
This fan had a simple question that most Blues fans were likely asking themselves: “Why have we saved our worst period performance of the season for today?”
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Monday evening starting at 7:30 pm EST.
Blues Vow To Improve Following Game 1 Loss to Jets
In their postgame media availability, goaltender Jordan Binnington opted to keep things positive by saying that despite the disappointing loss, there remains plenty of belief amongst his teammates.
“We played a hard game,” he said. “A lot of good things to take away from this game, for sure… It’s a long series, take it one game at a time. We’ve got a lot of belief in this room.”
Meanwhile, head coach Jim Montgomery acknowledged the reality of several of his young players appearing in their very first postseason game, but that they’ll be better for it moving forward.
“Overall, I thought it was a really good hockey game, but we are going to grow and we are going to get better. That’s what we’re going to have to do,” he said. Montgomery added that inexperience was certainly a factor, but the lessons from Game 1 will be implemented going forward.
The Blues will hope to rebound from Saturday’s loss to avoid going into an 0-2 series hole before moving back to home ice.
