Billionaire Owner Ryan Smith Drops 3-Word Reaction as NHL’s Utah Franchise Unveils Permanent Identity

“It’s finally Mammoth” – that’s how billionaire owner Ryan Smith labeled the big moment as the franchise made the fan-led decision official. Utah’s NHL team will now be called the Utah Mammoth, marking the dawn of a new era in Salt Lake City.

The franchise did more than a year’s worth of surveys, fan votes, and design work behind the decision, finally announcing a permanent identity. The name, logo, and jerseys were revealed on Wednesday at a press conference with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in Salt Lake City.

Fans voted on four rounds to select the name Mammoth; over 850,000 votes were cast in the process. The ‘Mammoth’ was ultimately a nod to the Ice Age, showcasing the strength, pride, and power of the Utah community as well.

    Inside Utah Mammoth’s New Identity

Billionaire franchise owner Ryan Smith had three words to hype up Utah’s NHL fans, writing:

    “Here We GO!”

The logo, the “Mountain Mammoth,” features the snowy Wasatch Mountains peeking out of one of the peaks, with tusks spelling out the “U.”

    The team’s slogan? “Tusks Up.”

The front of the home jerseys features a charging mammoth. To start with, the team will use the same colors:

    • Rock Black
    • Mountain Blue
    • Salt White

They’ve gone so far as to build a new font called Mammoth Sans, a slanted typeface intended to capture Utah’s rough-and-tumble feel. The only words on the inside of the collar of every jersey simply say, “Established 2024.”

“Utah Mammoth” came out on top in the finals, beating Utah Hockey Club and Utah Outlaws. Not only did fans pick the name, but they also played a role in how the team will look and feel.

“I couldn’t have said it better than this,” said Ryan Smith, the man who brought NHL hockey to Utah by purchasing the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes.

Utah Mammoth Ready to Build Something Big

Now that the team finally has a name, we can focus on what’s important: building a winning team for the future.

The Mammoth have the 6th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. That’s a big deal. They hold a top-10 selection and can select a young star who can have a real impact. The team will likely take a look at a skilled forward or smart defenseman who can elevate the squad and usher the franchise into a new era.

There are already a few young players who will beg consideration. At 21 years old, Logan Cooley had a great first season and looks like he can become the face of the franchise. Another exciting player is Josh Doan, who brings energy and heart every time he’s on the ice.

Ryan and Ashley Smith, the team owners, have proved that they care deeply about this team and its future. They’ve heard what the fans want, put money into top facilities, and brought new life to hockey in Utah.

With a high draft pick, promising young players, and the support of a fan base that is all in, the Utah Mammoth are ready to build something special — one season, one game, and one “Tusks Up” at a time.
