Alex Ovechkin has once again made NHL history, reaching his 900th career goal with a tally against the St. Louis Blues. The Washington Capitals captain is now the league’s first player to ever achieve this milestone, adding yet another chapter to his storied career.
How Alex Ovechkin Broke the NHL Record Books
Ovechkin, who overtook Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record last season with number 895, reached the historic mark in his 1,487th game, the very same total Gretzky played. Through 1,504 career games, Ovechkin’s résumé features 900 goals, 731 assists, a total of 1,631 points, and a Stanley Cup championship from the 2018 campaign.

For the 21st season in a row, the nine-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner continues to defy expectations, picking up three goals and eight points this year at age 40.
As Ovechkin’s journey to 900 was unfolding, the Capitals and Penguins prepared to reignite their famed rivalry in Pittsburgh. Ahead of their first matchup this season, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby spoke about Ovechkin’s scoring feat.
“He scores a lot, so…,” Crosby said, smiling. “Yeah, I mean, I wouldn’t know, but it’s something that I said when he got the record that I think a lot of people, myself, probably him included, thought that it would be pretty difficult to get that many goals.
“But, yeah, he’s just continued to find ways year after year. To be that consistent and that productive is pretty hard to even fathom. So I think, yeah, it’s a credit to him and just his consistency and his ability to find ways to score goals.”

Wes: “Seems inevitable Ovi will hit 900 tomorrow. Maybe tonight. I know you guys don’t want it to be tomorrow. Sorry about that.”
