Patriots Fans Rejoice on Social Media As Mac Jones Is Traded to Jacksonville – “The Mac Jones Era Is Over”

The Patriots on Sunday reportedly agreed to trade Mac Jones to the Jaguars. Here are some of the best social media reactions.

Mac Jones’ time with the New England Patriots reportedly is over.

New England on Sunday agreed to send the quarterback to the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to multiple reports. Jones was selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and spent three seasons as New England’s starting QB.

NFL World Reacts to Mac Jones Trade

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news of the Jones trade. He reported that the deal won’t be finalized until the start of the NFL’s new league year on Wednesday. Trade compensation wasn’t determined at the time of this writing, but the Patriots and Jaguars reportedly were “finalizing” a deal that would send a sixth-round draft pick to New England.

Jones, 25, grew up in Jacksonville and will now serve as a backup to Trevor Lawrence.

Jones is expected to compete with C.J. Beathard to be Lawrence’s primary backup. Beathard is in the final year of a two-year, $4.5 million contract he signed before the 2023 season.

The Alabama product had an impressive rookie campaign in 2021 and looked like he could be New England’s next franchise quarterback. But coaching dysfunction undermined Jones in 2022, and a variety of factors — including his own shortcomings — led to a rough season in 2023.

Patriots linebacker Mack Wilson sent a message to Jones after the news of his trade on his Instagram story.

For many Patriots fans, the end of the Mac Jones era was cause for celebration.

Jones was 352 of 521 for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as a rookie, but his production dipped over the next two seasons. In 2022, Jones finished 288 of 442 for 2,997 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Belichick then hired former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to lead the offense in 2023 in hopes of getting Jones back on track, but it never came to fruition. Jones finished last season 224 of 345 for 2,120 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, with Belichick benching him after 11 games in favor of Bailey Zappe.

In response to a post asking how the Mac Jones era will be remembered, fans shared their opinions.

“Mac is interesting to me. I never saw the really great QB potential in his rookie year that some did, but I also think he can be much better than what we’ve see the past two years. I guess I think he’s somewhere in the middle in the right situation. Handed a bad deck of cards but didn’t really help himself either,” one user said.

“Decent rookie year, both sides needed a clean slate. Probably is a career back-up but he certainly wasn’t put in the best position,” another said.

The Patriots own the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft, where many around the NFL expect them to select one of the top-rated quarterbacks — likely a decision between LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.

The Patriots currently have Zappe and second-year player Nathan Rourke on their quarterback depth chart.

The team had single selections in each round of the draft, so a sixth-round pick gives them an additional pick in that round and eight overall selections.
