With all their injuries this season, especially to Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers have been looking to shore up their defense. With the 49ers also still without starting quarterback Brock Purdy at this time, any help would be most welcome.
As the NFL Trade Deadline looms on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, the 49ers reportedly have their eyes on a Pro Bowler.
Which Player Are The 49ers Eyeing For A Trade?
On Monday, it was rumored that San Francisco might look to get Miami Dolphins defensive end Bradley Chubb, the Pro Bowler in question, or New York Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson II. But Chubb, according to rumors, appears to be the main target for the 49ers.
An account on X, which has often reported the right trades over the last year, posted an update about what the 49ers might be doing right now.
The #49ers have been calling for a pass rusher the past few weeks. With Jaelan Phillips traded, Niners could look to Bradley Chubb or Jermaine Johnson II. Two players they’ve called about. Chubb signed a three-year, $54,490,000 contract with the Dolphins, including $7,445,000 signing bonus, $33,462,444 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $18,163,333, according to SpoTrac.
In 2025, Chubb will earn a base salary of $1,255,000, a signing bonus of $7,445,000, and a workout bonus of $100,000, while carrying a cap hit of $12,327,739 and a dead cap value of $36,186,978.

In 82 career games, Chubb has 43.5 career sacks. He played his first four-plus seasons with the Denver Broncos before joining the Dolphins in the 2022 NFL season. Chubb missed the entire 2024 season with a torn ACL.
What can Chubb bring to the 49ers? A lot of experience along the defensive front. San Francisco must have been impressed with Chubb’s work for the Dolphins if they are reportedly looking to pick him up for the second half of this season. Based on PFSN’s Defense Impact metric, the 49ers currently have the 21st-ranked defense in the league.
Meanwhile, Johnson has 11 sacks in 38 career NFL games. He’s played his entire career with the Jets, so any potential move to the 49ers might give him an additional chance to add to his sack total.
The 49ers really do need help on defense. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has watched his team struggle with injuries throughout the season. Getting a healthy body on his defensive front would go a long way toward helping San Francisco. Chubb appears to be the primary target at this point, although all of this is based on rumors for now.
The coming hours will reveal whether this rumored deal becomes a reality.
