NFL Thanksgiving Throwback Uniforms: Which Teams Will Wear Throwback Uniforms for 2023?

There will be three NFL teams wearing throwback uniforms in the 2023 Thanksgiving Day games. Find out who they are and why they will be wearing a patch.

There will be three teams wearing throwback uniforms this Thanksgiving, as the NFL again provides three Turkey Day games for our entertainment.

It is not compulsory for NFL teams to wear throwback uniforms on Thanksgiving, but still, we will see a team wearing an alternative uniform in each of Thursday’s games.

Here are the teams and why they will be donning throwback uniforms this Thanksgiving.

What Are the Patches Worn by Thanksgiving Teams?

Uniforms worn by all six teams playing on Thursday will be extra special this Thanksgiving. Every player will be wearing a patch to honor the late, great John Madden. He passed away in 2021 and was synonymous with Thanksgiving football.

The NFL is honoring coach-turned-broadcaster this Thanksgiving with the second annual John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration. The day will be used to honor the legacy of Madden throughout the broadcast of each game.

Lions Throwback Uniforms

The Detroit Lions will be wearing their throwback uniforms when they take on the Green Bay Packers in the first game of the NFL’s Thanksgiving extravaganza.

The throwback uniforms they are using are a take on those that they wore when they started playing Thanksgiving Day games back in 1934. The uniforms are a classic blue jersey with silver pants and blue socks.

The Lions are 37-44-2 in Thanksgiving Day games and are looking to win their first since 2016. This will be the first time Detroit has worn alternative uniforms on Thanksgiving, and will be hoping the change in uniform will give them a change in luck.

Cowboys Throwback Uniforms

The Dallas Cowboys will be wearing their throwback navy uniforms in their Thanksgiving matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Like the Lions, the Cowboys’ throwbacks represent the uniforms they wore in their first Thanksgiving game in 1966. The uniforms include navy jerseys with white shoulder pads, white pants with navy stripes down each side, and a white helmet with the star on either side.

These throwbacks have been used multiple times before, including on Thanksgiving last year when they defeated the New York Giants.

49ers Throwback Uniforms

Finally, the San Francisco 49ers will be wearing their throwback uniforms when they take on the Seattle Seahawks in the last of the three Turkey Day games.

The uniform goes back to the 49ers’ last Super Bowl victory in 1994. They can also be seen as a double-throwback because those jerseys in themselves represented those worn by San Francisco in the 1950s.

The all-white uniforms include white jerseys with red stripes on the upper arm and white pants with black and white stripes going up the leg.

Plus, it isn’t the last we will see of these white throwback 49ers uniforms, as they are expected to wear them when they take on the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day.
