Communication issues and offensive mistakes marred the Minnesota Vikings’ 27-19 loss to the Ravens. By Wednesday, another storyline emerged when Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy appeared on the injury report for the first time this season. Head coach Kevin O’Connell explained the situation during his midweek press conference and offered clarity on where things stand heading into Sunday’s matchup with the Chicago Bears.
Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell Explains J.J. McCarthy’s Hand Injury
O’Connell said McCarthy hit the top of his throwing hand on an offensive lineman’s helmet late in the game against Baltimore. The collision caused notable swelling that lingered through Monday and Tuesday before improving enough for the quarterback to participate in a limited capacity during Wednesday’s practice. The Vikings want to be proactive about managing the issue, and McCarthy wore protective covering on the hand to prevent the swelling from returning.
“This is something that checked out well,” O’Connell said. “We just want the swelling to stay down and make sure it does not linger the rest of the week.”
The team is considering the injury more precautionary than problematic. Tracking his practice through the week will be important. Ideally, McCarthy would land a full practice either Thursday or Friday ahead of just his fifth career NFL start.
O’Connell shared several other injury updates. Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz underwent successful left shoulder surgery in Los Angeles and is expected to return to the building soon to continue his rehab. Center Ryan Kelly had his 21-day practice window opened after recovering from multiple concussions, and the team plans to monitor how he handles the increased workload while wearing a new helmet and guardian cap. O’Connell emphasized that Kelly’s progression will be evaluated with both the short-term and long-term picture in mind.
The Vikings are not concerned about any additional injuries that could impact availability for Sunday outside of McCarthy. O’Connell said several veterans received planned rest days as the coaching staff manages workload through the middle of the season.
The Vikings, now 4-5, are entering an important stretch as they prepare for Chicago. O’Connell said correcting communication issues and stabilizing the offense will be the focal points this week. The Vikings offense ranks 27th in PFSN’s OFFi.

With several veterans trending toward availability and McCarthy expected to increase his reps as the swelling subsides, Minnesota believes this is an opportunity to regain control of its season on Sunday against the Bears.
