The Vikings’ loss to Baltimore came with frustration, but head coach Kevin O’Connell brought a dose of optimism Monday when discussing the team’s health. After a bruising 27-19 defeat, Minnesota’s head coach said several key players are trending in the right direction, including defensive end Jonathan Greenard, safety Theo Jackson, tight end Josh Oliver, and offensive lineman Ryan Kelly.
Vikings Dodge Bad Injury News on Jonathan Greenard as Several Starters Near Return
O’Connell confirmed that Greenard avoided a long-term injury after exiting Sunday’s game and could return to practice this week. Greenard posted two tackles and a forced fumble against the Ravens. He’s a pivotal reason the Vikings defense ranks 7th in PFSN’s DEFi.
“He’s sore today, but we’ll see how he does throughout the week,” O’Connell said. “I think we avoided something more serious.” Greenard’s presence has been vital to Minnesota’s pass rush, and his potential return would help a defense that continues to hold opponents in check despite being on the field too often.

Safety Theo Jackson also cleared concussion protocol and is expected to be a full participant this week. His return bolsters the secondary, which held up well against quarterback Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ deep passing threats. O’Connell said the team’s defensive performance “did a lot of really good things” despite challenging circumstances.

On offense, O’Connell expects tight end Josh Oliver back on the practice field as he works toward game readiness. The veteran’s blocking and reliability in short-yardage situations have been missed, especially as Minnesota continues to search for balance between the run and pass. “We’re hopeful Josh can give us some snaps on Sunday,” O’Connell said.
The team is also encouraged by the progress of center Ryan Kelly, who has been sidelined on injured reserve. O’Connell said Kelly could have his practice window opened soon after strong work on the side field last week.
“He’s doing really well,” O’Connell said. “He stayed in rhythm with the team all weekend, and we’re encouraged by where he’s at.”
With a division matchup against Chicago on deck, O’Connell said the focus will be on maintaining health through the stretch run while cleaning up mistakes. The offense needs to find balance and answers before hosting the Bears.
“It’s that time of year where we want to have a fresh team as much as possible,” he said. “We’ve got to get our guys back and get this thing right.”
