The Atlanta Falcons took on their NFC South Division rival, the Carolina Panthers, on Sunday. Ahead of the game, Atlanta was 3-6, on a four-game losing streak, and third in the division. Carolina was 5-5 and 2nd with a recent loss against the New Orleans Saints in Week 10.
The Falcons had several implications going into this Week 11 game, including Raheem Morris’ NFL coaching future, offensive struggles, and the potential to save the season. Here’s a breakdown of what went right and what went wrong in their game against Carolina.
The Falcons’ Offense Rose Up
The Falcons’ offense has been inconsistent and inefficient, especially on third down, as they went 0/8 against the Colts in Week 10. But things were different this time around. The run game improved drastically with running back Bijan Robinson rushing for 104 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr.’s playmaking ability was in question by some. Still, he was productive today, throwing the ball on time and getting it to playmakers like Drake London and others. Penix Jr. went 13/16 for 175 yards before exiting the game in the 3rd quarter with an injury.
Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson called a solid game for the most part; their offense accumulated a total of 348 yards.
What Went Wrong For The Falcons
Atlanta’s defense was able to put pressure on Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, but Young threw the ball over the field, going 31/45 for 448 yards and three touchdowns. The Falcons’ secondary struggled to contain wide receivers Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette.
McMillan had eight catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns, while Legette caught four passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. They constantly made plays downfield and through the middle.
Penix Jr. suffered a knee injury in the 3rd quarter and had to come out of the game to be evaluated in the medical tent, and Kirk Cousins stepped in. Cousins threw for 48 yards on 6/14 passing.
The Falcons lost in overtime 30-27, decreasing their record to 3-7 and adding another game to their losing streak. They played well enough to win, but lost another close one, which seems to be a trend for the team.
Head coach Morris’ job was in question, and that may be more evident now with the loss, as rumors circulated that Atlanta may fire Morris due to the lackluster season they’re having. Morris has only been the head coach for a season and a half, but things have not gone that well throughout that time frame.
Atlanta’s season may be over, and the team has a lot to consider while it prepares for the rest of the games on schedule. PFSN has the Falcons at a 75.7 Offensive Impact Score, ranking 15th, while the defense is at a 71.6 Impact Score, which ranks 18th.
