Which officiating crew has thrown the most penalty flags in the first nine weeks?

Once again, the performance of the NFL referee crews was back in sharp focus this week. There are always small calls that cause upset, but the call by Tony Corrente on Cassius Marsh caused an uproar, both within the NFL and from those watching.

Prior to the week, Corrente’s crew had been one of the stingiest in terms of throwing the flag, but this week they led the league in flags with 23. However, Corrente is actually below average in terms of flags thrown per game this season.

The crew throwing the most flags is that of NFL ref Scott Novak (17.3 per game). Novak’s crew averages 0.6 flags more per game than the next highest, which is that of Carl Cheffers.

Unlike the performance that was front and center on Monday Night Football, this week’s Sunday Night Football game should hopefully be a smooth-flowing affair from the referees. The crew of Bill Vinovich will officiate that matchup. Vinovich sits at the bottom of the leaderboard in terms of flags thrown per game by NFL ref crews. Their average of 11.1 flags per game is 1.2 fewer than the next closest (Ron Torbert).
